is just as big for Coach Clawson as anybody else. Last year it was reported or rumored that Clawson may have used some choice words with his team in the locker room after his team's loss to SU, and I really have no idea about that. I do know that the following week Wake played BC, and Wake played much better. SU beat Wake by 23 points, and BC beat Wake only by 6 points. I say this because I caught the end of the first half of Wakes' game against BC, and when Clawson was interviewed on the sideline he said he was happy with his offense in the first half. He also said (and I'm paraphrasing here and my interpretation may be mistaken) that he was happy with his offense in the first half against BC especially in light of the fact that they were playing against a real ACC defense. He never said anything directly about SU, but his comment, at the very least, reminded some of the rumors of things he had said to his team after SU's win the previous week.

My point is simply that Clawson is confident. He is a bright coach. He is aggressive. These qualities are common in college football coaches. You have to be a little crazy to go into coaching, which is one of the reasons I respect coaches so much and prefer to support them especially the coaches who work for SU. They live in constant competition and uncertainty, and I respect the heck out of that. As for Clawson, I'm not so sure, though, that his personality works very well in Winston-Salem. I say that, in part, because I think a lot of people around the ACC have had a negative and inaccurate perception of HCSS's personality. Last year when Shafer made the change at OC, which was sudden and unexpected and a surprise to everyone, some of the rumblings questioning Shafer's motivation were so far wide that it was clear that those people knew nothing about Shafer and his personal relationships with his players and with his coaches. I suspect Clawson is misunderstood at times, and I have no doubt that he is under a lot of pressure right now. This game is big.

ACC football is improving across the board, and the gap between all of the p5 schools across the country continues to narrow. Some programs struggle one year and then the next year they are better, but overall I think a lot of people are seeing that there is more and more parity across the p5 landscape. If SU's defense can play well again this year (they were a legitimate ACC defense last year and I think they can become as good this year), I think SU can go bowling. I also believe that SU can pull off an upset or two, but I admit that it's also true that SU is capable of losing to Wake and so forth. It's as competitive as ever and this applies to each school. One thing I'm very confident about is that last season SU learned some valuable lessons. If they can stay together and keep it real behind the scenes they can win some games and go bowling. Go Cuse!!

He basically said that they really hated losing to us because they thought we were an inferior opponent. Problem was we waxed them with our 3rd string QB and knocked out his guy.

It was like all that talk when there's a close game and the coach laments the loss because "we were the better team" - but in this case it wasn't a close loss.

Douche.

Why did Bailey or one of the other PS writers refer to Wake's "stout defense?" Based upon their performance against Elon?

Since Wake has lost Nikita Whitlock 2 years ago and Kevin Johnson last year their D is really young. We should be able to run all over them.

Our offense didn't beat them last year. I believe our defense scored two touchdowns.

Which means the offense outscored them 16-7.

Put up 370 yards, averaged 5.3 per play and had 17 first downs.

One thing I know is that last year has nothing to do with this year.

(Clawson has been dirty on the recruiting against us to. With Ty cross and Jordan Fredericks among others). Shaf, doaust and bullough have this one circled.

From my preview:

Saturday, September 12 2015, 12:30PM at the Carrier Dome on ACC Network

WAKE FOREST: This is the team Syracuse is picked to battle it out against in the quest to avoid last place in the ACC’s Atlantic Division. Many pundits are picking them over Syracuse. It seems odd because, bad as we were, we walloped the Deacons in their own place last year, 30-7, even after the injuries had started to pile up for us and now we’ve got them in our place early in the season when we should be fairly healthy. That was our only conference victory last year while Wake went 2-6 and 4-8 overall, one win better than us in each case. Coach Dave Clawson has a history of rebuilding programs (Fordham and Bowling Green) fairly rapidly but Wake Forest and the ACC are a bigger challenge than he’s faced before.

Wake Forest was ”historically bad” on offense last year. (I guess we were only ‘hysterically bad’). They averaged 216 yards per game, the worst in the nation. John Wolford started as a true freshman at quarterback and fin shed last in the ACC in yards per attempt, throwing 12TD passes in 367 attempts. (Of course our four QB’s last year threw 382 passes and only six of them went for TDs but Wolford was their original starter). They like to spread you out and tight end Cap Serigne had 54 catches but they had no running game to speak of. They rushed for a total of 479 yards last year, 1.3 carry. They’ve got three starters back from a poor line. Wohlford was sacked 45 times, most in FBS and we remember what being sacked so many times did to Andrew Robinson. The Deacs, like us, are looking for playmakers and true freshman Tabari Hines could be one as a wide receiver/kick returner. Wideout Cortez Lewis is coming off shoulder surgery but has “vast potential”. They also recruited Ricky Reid away from Tennessee and the other North Carolina schools after he gained 7700 yards and scored 90TDs playing for Concord, NC High. They also got tailback Matt Colburn to decommit from Louisville. All are untested but could be game-changers.

They’ve got all of their linebackers back on defense which gives them a nice core to build around. Brandon Chubb, Marquel Lee and Hunter Williams recorded 261 tackles, 26 for a loss, last year and will probably have to do as well this year. Safety Ryan Janvion led the team with 113 tackles. End Zachary Allen had 12 tackles for loss and 5 sacks. Their best defender last year was cornerback Kevin Johnson, who is now in the pros.

They have a good punter in Alex Kinal, who averaged 43.8 (sometimes the best punters are on the worst offensive teams: they get so much practice) and their place kicker, Mike Weaver, hit 15 pf 19 field goals. That could certainly matter in a game between two teams struggling to find a productive offense.

Clawson has said that his biggest need was simply to get bigger and stronger and he thinks this year’s team will be. They will be very young with only four senior starters.

In a lot of ways this will be Syracuse playing Syracuse, or Wake playing Wake: two teams with similar problems trying to overcome them by beating each other. Who will get a leg up in proving that they are no longer like the other?

In 2014 they averaged 15-26 in points scored; 216-369 in total yards, 40-183 in rushing yardage; 176-187 in passing yardage and were -2 in turnovers.

Their only big advantage is that their former true freshman qb is now a soph with a full years experience under his belt...

I don't understand the logic of that. It's a team sport- the defense picks up the offense and vice versa. Yes, defensive touchdowns are far more unpredictable than offensive touchdowns (obviously), but they're still a valuable commodity.

Yep. He's the only guy I'm concerned with. He is accurate.

But I don't see him actually staying upright.

Why did Bailey or one of the other PS writers refer to Wake's "stout defense?" Based upon their performance against Elon?
Because Bailey is the same guy who said Conway beat out McGloster at 2nd string LT. He doesn't bother to realize McGloster is 65 , and at RT this year.

Can't wait! Huge game for everyone involved with Cuse! This will be a great measuring stick for us for where we are.

Our offense was very inconsistent in that game. We left a lot of points on the field. The defense gave us a lot of chances and we didn't capitalize. Our defense will have to get after them next week.
