Some of the more seasoned posters here may be able to provide some extended insight, but, I cannot remember a time in which so much youth contributed for Syracuse Football.

Not only youth but True FR and RFR. And to have that much success, regardless the opponent, has to be encouraging. I've got 38 underclass men in the participation report.

I can not remember any team having this many underclass men playing in the first game much less doing pretty decent, granted the poor opponent. The question is what can we derive from this, in my opinion too early to make any definitive conclusions, but it does seem to indicate better recruiting and an upgrade in overall talent for
Future looks promising.

Very true! Part of it is that many [not all] members of this frosh class seems unusually suited physically to play early. Another factor was that this team lacked playmakers, and some of the frosh look like they have the goods.

But probably the most important factor is that Shafer and co. know that they are coaching for their jobs -- so they are letting it all hang out.

Maybe it is simple as they are playing the best players.

In order to play young talent you have to be in position to teach and they to learn. What this tells me is that we are not only recruiting a better athlete but possibly one who is smarter as well. Add to that a great D coaching staff and now a great teacher in Lester and bingo bango what you see are kids who are buying into the program, have the capacity to learn, and are being led by coaches who have a plan can be taught and understood. To me this is the sign of a very solid staff

Points well made.

Never in my memory.

What amazed me was the physical maturity of some of these guys, especially Steve Clark and Jordan Fredericks.

These guys just don't look like frosh.

Dungey looks like a frosh but has the savvy of an upperclassman.

I'd also like to point out that we are talking about 1 game against a terrible team.

with similar circumstances I was also convinced that Hunt & AJ were the answer. that said, I'm giddy until life proves otherwise and the LSU game is the direct opposite of URI.

In Shafer's press conference he was asked about the freshman and said they are just different. Came in physically and mentally ready to make a difference. Seemed genuinely impressed. Said they really love the game and it shows in how they prepare.

We certainly have more now to attract better talent.

And it appears that what we now have is in fact attracting better talent.

Throw true Sophs into that mix as well... Thinking Erv, Ish, Zaire among others

Last year at Fort Drum, a guy who has been close to the program for close to 35 years, told us it was the best freshman class he has seen in 15 years. Maybe this has carried over to this freshman class as well. Staff can recruit
