A big factor is that there's just too much college football on TV. Game attendance is down everywhere due to oversaturation. When SU was drawing in the late 80s and 1990s, there were a handful of TV games on Saturday and nothing during the week other than a few Thursday contests. It's a seven-day football feast now, which makes it's hard for mediocre programs to differentiate themselves. Then, you have the fact that the home viewing experience is much better now. People can watch multiple games on great TVs and get information/comment about what they see in real-time online. There's a shared experience available there (e.g. the game threads on this board) that doesn't exist in person because WiFi in many stadiums is spotty. Throw in the central New York economy and fact that SU kills buzz/momentum every season by starting slow, overscheduling early and playing marquis games in NYC and it's lot more complicated than saying Upstate New York fans are lame. The good news, I think, is that the fan experience at games is going to improve a lot in the next 10 years. There's a lot of start-up and tech money going into the fan experience. The small size of the Carrier Dome and good sight lines actually offer some interesting possibilities compared to the big SEC stadiums.
