They matter MORE, when you're not winning. Comparing it to basketball is what is BS. The basketball team has had such a long sustained run of excellence that those other things are overlooked. Let the football team have a 30 year run and they wouldn't matter either. 8-5 every so often isn't going to change people's attitudes or desire to attend.
