I find this quote from Hickey to be a bit bizarre:

"When we get around the 6-, 7-yard line, it gets to that awkward yard-line," Hickey said after SU's 38-20 loss to Florida State on Saturday. "Are we going to run or throw or bring in the heavy formation? As a player it can get awkward."
-------

We've played 6 games (and practice Red Zone plays regularly) so what's up with Sean's "awkward" feeling at this point? I get that maybe he's feeling "anxious" in the RZ due to our lack or success. Is that what he's trying to say?

When I read his quote a couple of days ago I immediately thought, "That's a weird thing to say." I saw the (same) quote again today in a different article and thought I'd post to get some feedback.

The whole team looks awkward when they get inside the 10 yard line. I don't know why that is, but that has got to come from the top on down. Maybe a lack of confidence in the play-calling in those situations, which has been bizarre this season, to say the least.

I think it's him being honest. Until we figure out a way to get 6s instead of 3s, it's going to become a bigger and bigger mental hurdle.

Hopefully with the re-shuffling of coaches and players, we find a way to punch it in more frequently.

If you don't have clear direction and strategy, "awkward" is the right term.

This game on Saturday will tell me so much about this team and where second half of seAson. Is heading

This is not sarcasm, we should probably try to score when we get around the 30 to 15 yard line all the offenses that they were emulating with this package score on 20 to 60 yard plays often (Baylor, TAMU, Oregon). Throwing the ball down field is part of their formula because frankly they don't want to play redzone if they don't have to with the spread

Not knowing run or pass should make things equally awkward for the defense you would think. Whoever said that Hunt or McDonald were tipping off the d somehow may have been right.

Less field to spread and less field to defend. You run and get stopped you basically have a 2nd or 3rd and long. Throw an incompletion and defense will most likely blitz on an obvious passing down. If Lester gets a more balanced attack going I think we will be more successful on the run, get to 2nd and goal from the 2 or 3 and I think there will be more success. Just my opinion.

Good post.

I think Lester is going to use the heavy formation inside the 15.

It's like Chuck Knoblauch throwing to first base. It is now in their heads. With a QB that can actually throw fades and slants (like a normal team) it may change.

Oh god, don't compare us to Chuck Knoblauch. Of all the injustices ...

I don't find the comment odd at all. It is awkward down there. You need bread and butter plays to move the ball, not your normal offense.

That's why I liked seeing the DE's in for blocking. At least we were changing it up a little.

It's awkward because it seems the entire red zone package consisted of runs by Hunt, or the threat of him running.

As well as Hickey chop-blocking and Foy holding. Pretty solid gameplan.

Awkward means we don't know what the we are doing inside the 10. It's clear.

Honestly I hate that special package garbage. Just run your stuff. 290 pounders in the backfield? Barf. Roll your qb out. Go trips and have the inside guy go flat to the marker.

Running out stuff hasn't worked in two years, outside of the zone read with Hunt.

It doesn't work because we scheme it terribly.

We schemed it terrible under McDonald. One game in with Lester? Who knows.

Mr. Hickey and our offense in general just don't exhibit a pure, sexual understanding of the game.

/callback to what I would argue was the first meme and epic post produced by this most recent iteration of the board community

Don't explain the joke, man.

It was a good joke.
