The over-the-top stuff exists for good teams, too…it’s just that core fans don’t get as irritated by it. A big issue is that watching a game on TV is now probably better for a die-hard fan than going to the game. I’ll occasionally watch a classic game from the ancient times of the 80s or 90s, and it’s amazing how much better broadcasts are today as technology has continued to improve. Teams are trying to figure out ways to incentivize core fans to still show up (the NJ Devils have a point system which gives season ticket holders points for games they attend that can be converted into team merch or gameday experiences…I’m not sure but I think Syracuse is woefully behind in this area), but also knowing that they need a ton of casual fans they do a crapload of marketing to them. Most of the free t-shirt, free taco, fan of the game stuff is geared towards those casual fans. I don’t think the trend in gameday experience is great - but I also realize it’s not for me, and teams are doing it for legitimate business reasons. (As an aside, my 8 year old son won the “fan of the game” at a NJ Devils game a month ago, and he’s been on the edge of his seat watching Devils games with me ever since when previously he’d just watch a movie with his sister in another room. Sometimes teams get very lucky and some stupid promo for casual fans converts them into die-hards. So I keep that in mind in my critique of how teams manage gameday events now).
