I was never in the keep shafer clan, however, the more I think about it, and after missing on a guy like Frost, we should have given him one more year.

1. No buyout
2. Shafe will undoubtedly have gotten seasoned a bit. You could even see by clock management for the game winning fg he was starting to get it.
3. Continue to build on what was looking like a decent recruiting class
4. Players never seemed like they gave up, considering 8 straight losses
5. You have a guy that you know is committed to the program, no threat of leaving.
6. Well respected by his players and colleagues
7. This years coaching market was saturated with open positions. Many of which we will not compete with dollar wise.
8. Young defense was the death of this team. Next year will be better just based on returning players.
9. Young qb's was the second downfall to this season. All of the major players are coming back and the offense in my opinoin will take another step forward.
10. If you cuoldlnt get the guy you wanted. Frost. Then to fire this guy who was beloved by the players seems now like a mistake

The question wasn't keep him for one more year. It was do we extend him another year.

The part I don't get is who thinks Frost is the only guy we have been considering? The rumor mill had things the furthest along with him, but very often the rumors that get out aren't the ones closest to the truth.

The decision to move on from Shafer is independent of hiring the next coach. Once the determination was made that there was no way it could be justified to extend him, you cut ties and begin your search.

If you can't handle how the sausage is made, just wait in front of the counter and someone will bring it to you soon.

Yup, it now looks like we will be paying Shafer's buyout plus an extra $1 million a year for the same level of coach. Good going Coyle!

looking back, you only make the move to fire Shafer if you can get the guy you want. You dont fire Shafer to hire a 3rd or 4th guy

The problem with all of that is that a lame duck coach in college athletics makes it impossible to recruit. The incoming class probably would have mostly made it, but how in the heck is he supposed to recruit the next year's class? And how do you justify to the fan base giving Shafer an extension after a 3 year record of 14-23? I think if Shafer had been operating on a 5 year contract, he would have been retained, but the 4 year contract and this year's W-L results kind of forced Coyle's hand.

It's been less than 72 hours since the end of the BC game. We should definitely be making definitive statements now, before a new hire is even announced.
