This is the thing that frustrates me the most. We come out, and despite getting dominated for an entire half get the ball in the 2nd half and march down to score. 34-13. Three-possession game. With 3 minutes less than a full half of football left.

Defensively we force a punt after one first down. Nice work. Then we get these three play calls:

1st and 10 at SYR 22Prince-Tyson Gulley rush for no gain to the Syrac 22.1334
2nd and 10 at SYR 22Prince-Tyson Gulley rush for 1 yard to the Syrac 23.
3rd and 9 at SYR 23Drew Allen pass incomplete to Ashton Broyld.

Two issues - 1) Jerome Smith had 2 carries for 14 yards on the previous series. Get him the ball. He isn't tired. 2) Drew Allen was 5-for-6 for 68 yards on the previous series. He was getting into a rhythm. Then you put him in a 3rd-and-long situation with those two straight run plays. Not a great feel for the game if you ask me.

Even after that, we get a great punt and after a few first downs force another punt. Not a great series by the D but good enough. Touchback on the punt, get the ball at the 20. Four straight passes, didn't execute very well but overall a better series than the one prior. Got a first down. Just didn't execute. Fine.

Punt again. Another really good one pins Northwestern. After another first down, NW punts again (that's 3 straight punts for those scoring at home and still a 3-possession game). Get the ball at the NW 44 - great field position! TD here and we're down 14 and ready to possibly come back. And here's the play calling:

1st and 10 at NW 44Devante McFarlane rush for 4 yards to the Nwest 40.1334
2nd and 6 at NW 40Devante McFarlane rush for 3 yards to the Nwest 37.
3rd and 3 at NW 37SYRACUSE penalty 5 yard Delay of Game accepted.
3rd and 8 at NW 42Drew Allen pass incomplete to Ashton Broyld.

Redshirt freshman in instead of your stud RB? Once again, Jerome Smith had 11 carries all game. He's your "star". Get him the ball. And the delay of game penalty was absolutely brutal, putting us in another 3rd-and-long scenario.

We had ample opportunities to get back into this game IMO. I don't think we realistically had a chance to win it, but you never know. Our defense stunk in the 1st half, but made adjustments and despite what you want to say about NW's playcalling going conservative, they did a better job.

I just don't like the fact that our offensive coaches are not putting these players in a position to succeed. Be it personnel or play calling, they need to get it figured out.

I talked about these exact same series a few days ago for exactly the same reasons. I blew a gasket about that first series of two straight runs 3rd and long pass. After the opening TD drive McDonald completely lost me in that 3rd quarter.

that was a strange set of downs . could easily have climbed back into the game. still last year we had lots of series where we ran and ran if passing situations.. The oline is not playing nearly as well in the running game and that is hurting the O more than most want to admit. Play calling can only do so much.. we also had several series were if AB could catch at a high level we get into scoring range at least 2 each game that really hurt. Tough but not great catches required.. We need to see a drive where we just run down the field, when that happens things will get much easier. Im not sure it will this year. the NW breakdowns on D left guys wide open and we gained 15-20 yds NW scored tds or went 30-40 yds.. we need some big plays on occasion.

PUNTERS GOTTA PUNT

Has that gotten old yet? Don't worry everyone, it'll come back around. It's a long season.

I have zero issue with McFarlane's runs. 2 plays, 7 yards - 3rd and 3. Delay of game is the villain there.

Yeah that PTG twice drive made me a little crazy.

I think the next one was the one that made me realize I'd enjoy myself more on Rush St so off I went.

Random side note. Walked out of the stadium and happened to find a cab right there. It felt like the only thing about the experience that went right so thank you alcohol gods.
