There are 125 teams in FBS. the 63rd ranked scoring offense, the one right in the middle), was Kentucky who scored 29.2 points per game. To beat an average team in this era, you've got to score 30 points.

How many times in it's history has the SU football team averaged 30 points per game, (I"m including bowl games)? It's a short list.

1904: We scored 405 points in 9 games, an average of 45.0 points per game. We beat Manhattan that year 144-0, the only time we've ever hit the century mark. The rest of the year we scored 261 points in eight games, which is still 32.6 but that includes 69-0 over Clarkson, 52-4 over Niagara and 69-0 over Allegheny. Against Colgate, Yale and Army, the only big-time schools we played that year, we were 0-3 and got out-scored 14-49.

1916: We scored 275 points in nine games, 30.6. Our opening three games were against something called "All-Syracuse", Ohio U. &. and Franklin & Marshall, whom we out-scored by a combined 190-0. The rest of the schedule we were 2-4 and scored 85 points.

So those don't really count and the rest are fairly predictable:

1959: We scored 413 points in 11 games = 37.5
1987: We scored 379 points in 12 games = 31.6
1995: We scored 375 points in 12 games = 31.3
1996: We scored 437 points in 12 games = 36.4
1997: We scored 441 points in 13 games = 33.9
1998: We scored 478 points in 12 games = 39.8
2012: We scored 390 points in 13 games = 30.0
(We just made it with the 38-14 bowl win over the Mountaineers.)

So, in a real sense, we've had seven teams in our history who scored enough to consistently beat average teams in 2014.

Wow. First, please tell me you weren't around for those games in 1004. That would be hardcore.

How good was the defense in 1987, that 31.6 is enough for an undefeated season?

I am shocked to see that none of the Marvin Graves years are on the list.

How much of a difference-maker was McNabb (and the offensive talent around him)? Who was our OC during that stretch?

As I've said it's like college basketball in the 1940's, when we went from 40-30 games to 80-70 games and if teams didn't adjust, they lost. And we play in the perfect place for high-powered offensive football, the sort that attracts recruits from all over the country to play it.

The game has changed. Someday we will too.

Our AD prefers defensive minded head coaches because it worked with Pete Carroll at one of the most storied programs in college football in one of the most talent rich states in the country.

It took about everyone in and out of his circle to hire one offensive guy.

Meanwhile we sit in our non hotbed state with a unique roof over our heads and try to be hardnosed.

None of this is a secret, I just like to type it out sometimes to see if it still seems ridiculous.

Still does.

If you have Southern Cal's talent you can run a simple offense and still score a lot of points. If you don't you're going to have to scheme to get your players an advantage. You can't win any more by punting and "hoping for a turnover", especially when we don't score when we get one.

I think starting next year we should fine Shafer every time he says this.

By season's end, the IPF will be the Scott Shafer Center.

There could be a series of figures in the lobby depcting our famous fake field goal pooch punt.

I think I'm going to start a thread for a Scott Shafer drinking game. Drink everytime he says:

Hardnosed
Force a turnover
Etc.

Would make the pressers of next year's looming lost season much more fun.

How about adding, "played their tails off"???

I've never heard him say "etc.". :noidea:

We have played 21 games against P5 competition under Scott Shafer.

We have scored 30 points 2 times. We are obviously 2-0 in those games and 5-14 in games we haven't scored 30 points.

Our offense has just not been good enough in modern college football.

One of those games was against Wake this year. A game where our offense scored a grand total of 1 TD. Defense scored 2. Ugh...
