This article about JB deserves its own thread...

After closely watching almost 150 games over the past four years, Herbert said he could recognize Boeheim’s patterns, simply through his on-court interactions with players and assistants.

“I’ll notice over a season, he’ll yell at one or two players, either because they’re not living up to the potential they might have, or they’re not listening to what he’s telling them to do,” Herbert said. “Every year it’s someone different. It’s always interesting to see who he’s got the biggest problem with.”

I think most of us knew this already without being lip readers ourselves.

It does raise an interesting point though - how do we keep teams from using information obtained through lip reading during the actual games? A team could call a TO right after an SU TO and implement a defense based on what JB said in the first huddle.

In the NFL, all the coaches hold their playsheets over their mouths so the TV cameras can't see anything.

And the Browns have proven why that's necessary now, haven't they?

I always thought they were silly for doing that, but guess not. I watched Hoosiers again last night. Maybe JB will take to holding a little leather notebook like Coach Dale and put that over his mouth during time outs.

Silently Lip "do you suffer much". Then ask someone what you said. They will all say that you were saying "you son of a bitch"!

This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps

OrangeXtreme beat me to finding this by a few minutes, but he put it at the bottom of the long "Orangeyes" thread above. It is about an SU fan who lip reads JB during games... and then tweets what he sees.

Great story...great bit Herbert's got.
Thanks.

But you have to wonder about the Syracuse "paper."
This guy works as an entertainment for Syracuse.com.
Why haven't the sports guys used his info before?
Didn't they know their own guy was doing this?

I have seen it a bunch.

I dont think its something to publish though - other than an article like this.

I swear I have thought about this so many times - having lip readers interpret sideline speak. Great idea. And not for nothing, but this is the first documented, actual, legitimate use of social media that I have so far encountered.

That was my first thought, too, Colonel (thank you for your service). You can teach reporters a number of things, but you can't teach them how to spot an obvious story,

May not matter in time. Robotic reporters are on the way (in fact, they're already here). http://www.poynter.org/news/mediawire/324601/ap-will-use-software-to-write-ncaa-game-stories/

If you follow Geoff on twitter you know he has been reading JAB's lips for a while now. It's pretty interesting but not sure it's considered all the news that's fit to print.
