This is a story about whether a school is turning a blind eye to its own policies and therefore creating a culture of indifference. This is what the NCAA must decide.
The story will likely not remain in the headlines for very long, as the media probably feels we don't need a national debate on marijuana use amongst 18-22 year olds. Unlike, say, child abuse, where there was that perceived need to hold town hall-like discussions. Thus, I think the story will likely be gone by Thursday or Friday, and will only resurface if and when the NCAA makes a statement on the matter.
As the cliche goes, its not the crime (drug use), its the cover up. Certainly self-reporting sounds like good faith, but maybe there's more to it.
