Hi guys, I am a Baylor alum and am currently getting my masters through Syracuse. I started following Cuse athletics earlier this year. I have posted some on the bball board and read the football/basketball board often so am aware of the discussion around the coaching staff. I have watched pretty much every football game this year (I was at the Minnesota game) and coming from someone who has not followed the program in the past, I have to say that this is a horribly coached football team. The amount of stupid mistakes they make and horrendous play calling at times is inexcusable. I witnessed the 2nd and inches call at Minnesota and that has to go down as one of the top 2-3 dumbest calls I have ever seen (and I have seen some really bad football)! There is definitely enough talent to win a lot more games than they have thus far/ likely will in a mediocre league such as the Big East. To me the performance problems with this team are CLEARLY on the coaching staff.

Baylor was terrible for the good part of the past decade and many were saying that we would not ever be able to compete in the Big 12. However, I have seen what good AD’s and coaches can do with Baylor now enjoying a very high level of athletic success in pretty much every major sport. Cuse football has had success in the past and there is no reason why they shouldn’t be very competitive going into the ACC. Make the tough decisions and get the right personnel.

Also as a Baylor alum, he's seen some shitty football from the pre-RG3 era.

I'm no Marrone fan, but it's a lot easier to turn the corner in Texas. Even the 3rd and 4th level Texas HS kids that Baylor gets are better than a majority of kids in the northeast.

Baylor was as garbage as any program ever was. The talent level of the kids they got to pick probably left them with kids as good as the guys we get a shot at in Nj, LI, PA, and OH. Lets not act like we are nowhere near football country. If they can get out of the cellar, anyone can.

I didn't watch this game today because I knew exactly what would happen. This team is good enough to win, but makes awful mistakes every week. There is no discipline in their actions.

Disciplined teams don't make bad passes, and have bad fumbles consistently like we do. Disciplined teams don't have bad penalties consistently that cost them like we do.

If we could get out of our own way, we'd be a half decent team. But we cannot get out of our own way. That's on the coaches.

It took a coach (Art Briles) who had the ability to find talent and develop them in a system where they could thrive. RG3 was a four star recruit but virtually no major programs wanted him as QB. Story goes that Briles told him back then that he had all the tools to be a Heisman trophy winning QB. He has a track record for building great offensive teams and developing QB's to where now we no longer need an all-world type of QB like RG3 to put up a lot of point (#2 ranked offense right now). We are at a point now where we are even beating teams like Texas head to head for big time recruits. It’s all about coaching and building a program that players want to be part of. If you are an offensive player who wants to be successful and showcase your talent for the NFL, Baylor is a very attractive place to be now.

The Minnesota and Rutgers game were clearly lost to horrible coaching and play calling in my opinion. You can't have a team that makes as many boneheaded mistakes as SU does and not blame it on coaching. Minnesota is not a good team and SU had every chance to win but kept shooting themselves in the foot. Same thing happened today.

If only it were as easy as replacing a coaching staff.

As noted, Baylor was god awful for a long time. We finally said enough is enough and got a coach who knows what he is doing and we have a team that expects to make a bowl game and compete with the big boys regularly.

So all we have to do is say "enough is enough" and get a coach who knows what he's doing?

Why didn't we think of that?!

There are many who've felt for quite some time that DM is drowning, but a good chunk of them don't want to make the tough decisions you refer to. It's better to cut bait than double up on a losing hand and delay the judgement day.

This is why Syracuse is so frustrating. We have a venue no other BCS has that is built for offensive firepower.

Good thoughts.

And be thankful you are seeing this team after WE'VE TURNED THE CORNER.

OrangeBear, I too am a Baylor alumnus. I received my law and grad degrees at Syr when McNabb was here. Obviously, some pretty darn good football. It was easy to follow the Orange while the Bears sucked big time in the Big 12. Now, the roles are reversed and Syr sucks big time. My how times change!

I'm not ready to throw in the towel with Marrone. I'm tired of the coaching carousel here. When we hired him, we hired him for good. We just have to ride this one out even if it means a few more disappointing seasons (although I personally don't think this will be the case). I think after a few more seasons of his recruits, we will be able to field a better product on the football team. We just need an impact player like an RGIII or a Ray Rice to turn a program around.

In case it was not clear, what I meant to say is SU needs to pony up the money (likely need to overpay) to get proven high caliber coach who can turn this thing around. Baylor went through several coaches who had the "potential" to be good coaches (failures) until they hired Briles (someone who had ACTUALLY turned around a program in the gutter (Houston)) and had Texas roots and connections to Texas high school (for recruiting). Baylor paid a decent chunk to get him and have rewarded him repeatedly with nice pay bumps to make sure he does not leave.

Now we have an expert from Baylor...really people?

I have a rooting interest in SU but also went to Baylor. Never said I was an expert, just making observations without any sort of bias.

I was thinking the same exact thing! Baylor and SU are similiar schools in a lot of ways and you having gone there can probably understand what I mean by that. You are right in that SU needs a big time player to kick start the turnaround but what bothers me is the number of dumb mistakes this team makes almost every game. If they could just get that corrected, they would have another two more wins right now.

And yet what? We throw all the time

The qb you want to throw even more just isn't going to win you games

This is an interesting question that I keep asking myself, and the way it boils down for me right now is: The common denominator in the Minny and Rutgers losses, the shots to the foot, is Nassib's 3 turnovers in each game. If I blame Marrone for that do I blame him for failing to bench Nassib or do I blame Marrone for failing to teach Nassib to make better decisions on the field? Nassib is a 5th year senior who as started the past 31 games.

Maybe not. But showcasing a system and gameplan unique to the northeast could attract better talent.
