Here are my thoughts...
This is defensive, not just offensive. If the Big 10 adds Rutgers and ND, it could really deliver NYC more than we would like to admit. If that happens and Rutgers brings in Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska, Penn State, etc. on a regular basis for conference games, they will be able to recruit better, and they'll get a much better coach once Schiano gets fired. As someone else said, keep your enemies closer. We'll be in the same conference and would be on an even playing ground with recruits from that perspective.
Even adding RU and UConn would allow the Big 10 to cut right into what the ACC is trying to stake out for itself. By adding Rutgers and UConn, that's blocked. Syracuse, UConn and Rutgers delivers NYC. Even if not now, ND becomes irrelevant over time.
