Thoughts on John Reagan?

Like the thought. Dont know enough about him. Good find.

A good candidate? Or are we done with former Syracuse O-lineman turned offensive coordinator? Seems to be doing well and has ascended well through the ranks. Also a NY guy.

Rice finished 2012 44th in total offense (SU finished 19th). They were 41st in scoring offense, 30th in rushing offense and 68th in passing offense. Not bad numbers but they play in C USA, which is not known for its defensive prowess.

If Hackett is promoted, might make sense to make John the new OC. Personally, I think Hackett is a better candidate for the HC position.

Depends on a lot - first of all, does he have a binder of plans?

Kidding aside, if we're going to hire a coordinator as our head coach, I'd rather take someone from a BCS school. Like Tom Herman (Ohio State), Shawn Watson (Louisville), Phil Montgomery (Baylor), Dameyune Craig (Florida State, now Auburn) or Chad Morris (Clemson).

Yep, Reagan as OC should be looked at.

He will likely be on the list of candidates. Marrone wasn't first choice last time, and I am guessing Reagan won't be first choice this time, but I could see the position falling to him, especially if any potential internal candidates are swept off with Marrone. Can't say he would generate a lot of excitement, but he would probably be a safe pick if other higher rated candidates turn us down.

Nobody is going to the NFL to be a position coach if they have a chance to be HC. And I don't think you would leave being a coordinator to do that either.

Really? Since I understand that the SU gig is horrible, wrought with zero support and negative fans, you think a guy like Hacket would rather be HC here than OC of the Bills?

Timing is key imo. Maybe if Hackett or Shafer or someone else on staff gets a shot, and it happens quickly, then I agree with you. If the process drags out, Marrone will be filling his staff and guys will have to choose between a job offer and a potential HC gig. Didn't Schiano bring a lot of his staff with him last year when he went to the the NFL?

Do our thought now turn back to Reagan for OC as opposed to HC? I looked on the Rice board and those folks seem impressed with what he was able to do with their lack of offensive talent.

Don't know anything about Rice's roster, but that's another factor in comparing the OC's performance. We did well this year but with an NFL QB, LT, and probably at least one NFL WR.

Rice is the smallest school by student population in FBS and Reagan turned up the offense speed and recruiting bringing them a bit of revelence which they have not had for awhile or often in their history. Rice is also an excellent academic institution with a very tough honor code so they only recruit high character kids, and he knows the recruiting grounds of Texas. This would be at the top of my list of OC candidates.

I have a different thought, i've mentioned this before on another thread but i was actually recruited by John while he was at SUNY Albany back in 1995. He was very personable and smart guy. Really liked him and was seriously considering SUNY Albany but then he left to Oklahoma St.. He was by far my favorite recruiter. Still remember him coming to the guidance office at Marcellus, sporting a big fat 1993 Fiesta Bowl Ring. I think he would be a great fit.

just read his bio on rice athletics, which left me about as far as I was before reading it, which is to say I had never heard of him. It mentioned a few kids he coached who were mentions for all american, etc. however I just didn't see much there. It mentioned time at the air force academy and kansas, which have never had strong teams or the most gifted players, but it doesnt seem he was ever picked to put in time at a major school either. With that said, I also didnt see anything glaring that would go against him. Still trying to make my opinion, would like to be convinced..

I like the fact that was an O Lineman and has coached that position. He is OC and running backs coach as well.

He is from NYS which means he will know what he is getting into climate wise.

i'd be ok with reagan, but his "forte" is the run game. he did well at kansas as the ol and run game coach and i think he was there the 1-2 seasons where they had a good offense. he has done well at rice and they have had a good run game, but not so much passing game. he's coached several all league and all american lineman. if anyone remembers, he was the dl coach at temple for a few years and coached klecko. he may not be my #1 but would certainly be worth the interview.

Keep in mind he is very limited personal wise at Rice and his quarterback was recruited by every other DI program as an athlete not a qb because he came from a run based offense in high school so copnsidering that Rice was more balanced than they even had a right to be, and once again he has ties to Texas high school football coaches all across the state. He would run the system he is given (the Hack spread hurry up), is intelligent enough to do it and Zach would probably becomfortable with him and and we have very good personel depth now (unlike when DM took the job) even better than when he helped Kansas to a 10-3 record and BCS bowl Cuse would be an exciting playground for him right now me thinks.

;)

Don't disagree with that. I also wonder if Allen is all in because he ahs been told who the OC is and just maybe it is Reagan.

I don't go into conspiacy theories much but that is an interesting thought on Allen. You know the top recruits in TX see every recruiter from TX DI schools I am sure Reagan has been inside THS (not necessarily for Zach but maybe one of his teammates) chalk this up to things that make you go hmmmm
