Some so they don't get cluttered and some because it's a spicy topic and the mods don't feel like refereeing a lost cause.

Threads are usually locked because someone took a thread off topic, usually to a different area than the board is it in focuses on.

Sometimes threads get locked because a couple posters get into an extended argument that makes the thread unreadable.
