These factors all fed into each other.

1. Losing on 1st down on defense in run defense. Had to get USF to behind the sticks. Didn't happen. They were 7/10 on 3rd down, USF was last in the country coming into the game, because they were in 3rd and short most of the time.

2. No run game. 77 yds on 33 carries is not "pounding the rock", it's running into a wall. Obviously Lester wanted to establish the run game. It's been a struggle and they either got to get it fixed or be more balanced early. The play action pass game doesn't work withoutt a run threat, they are in the danger zone with that right now.

3. 3 non turnover turnovers. The punt hitting Whitner, I guess is counted as a fumble, the late hit, and the 3rd and 14 escape from a tackle for a loss. All three times SU was going to get the ball back and instead I believe USF ended up getting points on all three possessions. The late turnovers contributed to the final score but didn't really effect the outcome.

Clean up any two of those three and it might go a different way.

Good post. On #3, two of those were on the same drive, that resulted in a TD eventually. But equally killer. What made the first one so bad (Bennett's missed tackle), was that we would had it back with good field position.

Second one (late hit), best case we get it back at the 20 after a touchback.

Wasn't there a missed tackle for loss on the USF end around option TD pass?

I would stop short of calling it a "blow out." It was a one possession game in the fourth quarter; although the offense never had the ball in the second half while trailing by fewer than 14 points.

This team was down 24-3 approx. midway through the 3rd quarter (to a 1-3 team) and, up until that point showed absolutely very little signs of life, offensively or defensively. The largest contributing factor (in my opinion) coming off a two week bye, was a team ill-prepared to take on their first road game of the season. That, in my view, rests primarily with the coaching...

A missed tackle, and a DB (Winfield) who didn't stay with the WR. That play took 3 years to develop.

And we still couldn't make a play. Disappointing to say the least.

I would be interested to see how many total missed tackles we had. Lots of guys diving with there arms at the runner. I counted 3-4 (4th one was behind and not 100% if it counts) on one of the longer runs. We need this fixed ASAP

Agreed. In person, it looked like the coaches had not even scouted USF.

Missed tackles. Either our guys are slow or theirs are fast and shifty. You set your angle of attack in the blink of an eye based on your assessment of his speed and direction. When you tackle air you realize you misjudged. You also have to keep your eyes on the target right up to impact. Not so easy, but if we are not as quick as the opposition, more often we get burned.

Offense not waking up until the 2nd quarter for the 2nd game straight.

Or we just missed tackles because we were bad at tackling?
