These factors all fed into each other.

1. Losing on 1st down on defense in run defense.   Had to get USF to behind the sticks.  Didn't happen.   They were 7/10 on 3rd down, USF was last in the country coming into the game, because they were in 3rd and short most of the time.

2. No run game.  77 yds on 33 carries is not "pounding the rock", it's running into a wall.  Obviously Lester wanted to establish the run game.   It's been a struggle and they either got to get it fixed or be more balanced early.   The play action pass game doesn't work withoutt a run threat, they are in the danger zone with that right now.

3. 3 non turnover turnovers.   The punt hitting Whitner, I guess is counted as a fumble, the late hit, and the 3rd and 14 escape from a tackle for a loss.   All three times SU was going to get the ball back and instead I believe USF ended up getting points on all three possessions.     The late turnovers contributed to the final score but didn't really effect the outcome.

Clean up any two of those three and it might go a different way.
