Twenty-Fourth Pick Overall

With their second pick in the first round at 24, Cleveland can once again go after the best talent available, but the team has a big need at backup point guard and backup center. Marquis Teague, Tyshawn Taylor, Tony Wroten, Fab Melo, or Festus Ezeli could be the Cavaliers’ solution for one of these needs.

Melo made big strides at the defensive end of the floor with Syracuse in his sophomore season. So much so that the seven-footer has drawn Kendrick Perkins comparisons. Unfortunately, his offensive game is also worthy of a Perkins comparison. This center has plenty of upside and would develop nicely behind an energy big man like Anderson Varejao.

The Heat also have the NBA Draft coming up where they’ll pick near the end of the first round. The Heat would likely love to see Syracuse center Fab Melo fall to them at pick 27. Melo is a 7’ defensive-minded center who could provide great inside defense for the team.

But, Melo is very limited offensively and would need time to develop. The Heat may also look at center Festus Ezeli, who is 6’11” and weighs 255 pounds. He averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds in the SEC last season while shooting 54 percent from the field.

18) MINNESOTA – G Dion Waiters, Syracuse – Waiters is a combo guard, probably best suited for the shooting guard position but capable of running the point for stretches in the game. Waiters attacks the basket, loves to take his man one on one, and can jump passing lanes creating turnovers. He needs improvement on his shot selection, his outside shooting consistency, and he needs to play more under control. In 2K, his weaknesses aren’t as glaring as his strengths are a plus. I can see Waiters rated between 63 and 67 overall.

19) ORLANDO – - C Fab Melo, Syracuse - With the Dwight Howard saga hanging like a black cloud over the franchise, Orlando’s best bet is to make that they have a big man for 2012-2013. That’s why a slight reach for Fab Melo, the Syracuse seven-footer, is a good choice here. Now there’s no doubt Melo will come in with a low overall rating and with a high potential rating. Breaking it down, Melo excels at rebounding and shot blocking. He really needs to work on almost everything else, especially his offensive game. Melo projects to be rated between 58 and 63 overall with “A” potential.
