Rookie Doug Hogue ready to step up after Isaiah Ekejiuba's injury
A couple weeks ago, a Twitter followed asked me who I’d pick as the top three quarterbacks in the MEAC.
At the time, I answered Chris Walley (Norfolk State), Jamarr Robinson (Bethune-Cookman) and Nick Elko (Delaware State). I considered Hampton’s David Legree a close fourth. Two weeks later, I’d make it Walley, Legree and Robinson, with no one else in the discussion.
Legree has shown rapid improvement in just a few games under new offensive coordinator Willie Snead. The difference between Walley and Legree is small. Walley is more accurate, with better passing efficiency and completion percentage, but Legree is a better runner and leads the MEAC in total yardage. Walley has the turnover edge and, thus, the slight advantage in my book. Robinson, at No. 3, is a transfer from Maryland and has the same strengths and weaknesses as Legree, but he isn’t quite as experienced in Bethune’s offense.

The Chargers, who are getting used to injuries, will use Steve Gregory with Weddle along with some other young players. Gregory is serviceable, but a healthy Sanders could have been special.

Also limited in practice Wednesday was fullback Tony Fiammetta, who has a hamstring injury.

ECU is adorably trying to fill Pitt or Syracuse’s Big East shoes. After the ACC stole two of the Big East’s teams, the least we could do was give them something from North Carolina. Chock it up to Southern hospitality.
