Incoming SU PG Kaleb Joseph Can Jump

Kaleb on Hop: How His View Changed From Phony to Family PS; Carlson)

Kaleb Joseph thought Mike Hopkins was a phony.

Once Hopkins proved he wasn't, he became the main reason Joseph settled on Syracuse.

Hopkins, a Syracuse assistant for 19 years, is known for his positive approach and friendly demeanor, a relentless wave of energy that seemingly has only built since his playing days at SU.

Joseph wasn't buying it.

"I told him I thought he was a phony," Joseph said.

"You know how he is," Joseph continued. "All that energy, always so positive. How could that not be an act? Like a car salesman. I called him on it. I told him that's what I thought."

JB Thinks Rakeem Christmas Will be Most Improved Player Next Season (PS; Waters)

...
In discussing Christmas' remarkable achievement of graduating a year early, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said he believes that Christmas could be on the verge of making a big leap on the court next season. Christmas, a 6-foot-9 center, averaged 5.8 points and 5.1 rebounds last season. Boeheim said he thinks Christmas could be a candidate for the Atlantic Coast Conference's Most Improved Player award.

After talking about Christmas' accomplishments in the classroom, Boeheim said this about Christmas' work on the practice court.

"He continues to work hard on the court,'' Boeheim said. "He's gotten better and he'll continue to get better. I think he'll be the most improved player in the conference next year.''

JB and Juli Go to Washington (PS; Ditota)

Jim and Juli Boeheim were briefed. The Syracuse basketball coach and his wife had been told their Wednesday White House tour would likely include a meeting with President Barack Obama at about 10 a.m.

They were warned, however, that sometimes the President of the United States has unexpected, pressing issues to address. Sometimes, plans must be postponed.

JB Takes a Picture with Fellow SU Alum Joe Biden During White House Visit (collegespun; Lyons)

Jim and Juli Boeheim are in Washington D.C. this week with a number of other top basketball coaches—including Kevin Ollie, Tom Izzo, and Jay Wright—to do a leadership panel at the Pentagon. While in the nation’s capital, the coaches took a tour of the White House, and had the chance to meet President Barack Obama, as well as one of Syracuse basketball’s biggest fans, Vice President Joe Biden.

Biden has been effervescent in his support of the Orange, especially this season. Biden is a graduate of Syracuse’s College of Law.

Chris McCullough Will Help SU On Both Ends of the Court (rantsports; Philson)

The Syracuse Orange are losing quite a bit from the team that started 25-0 last season with Tyler Ennis somewhat surprisingly declaring for this upcoming NBA Draft earlier this spring.

However, coach Jim Boeheim did not slack on the recruiting trail, and with the addition of forward Chris McCullough as part of this year’s class, the Orange could again be a threat to challenge for the top spot in the ACC.

McCullough is a perfect fit for Boeheim’s system in every way. His length at 6-foot-10 will frustrate offenses going up against the 2-3 zone. The zone has worked at Syracuse because the players not only run it well, but they are also long players who fill up passing lanes, deflect passes and cause turnovers.

"I'm very excited and very thankful for the opportunity,'' Presutti said in a phone conversation on Wednesday. "I'm really looking forward to getting to Milwaukee and getting started.''

Presutti spent this past year working for USA Basketball. Previously, he was the director of player development for former Syracuse assistant Rob Murphy at Eastern Michigan. Presutti's main duties at Eastern Michigan included video coordinating.

SU Coach JB Goes to Washington to Talk Basketball and Soldiering (PS; Poliquin)

As it was Groucho Marx who once opined that "military intelligence is a contradiction in terms," the temptation today is to wonder if he is somewhere even now raising his eyebrows as he sucks on a cigar.

And the reason is that our generals and such — including, remarkably, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — have invited seven college basketball coaches to the Pentagon (yes, the Pentagon) where today a strategy seminar will be convened and a panel discussion involving some 400 service members will be held.

Biggest Question for Players in Projected 2014-15 Lineup (BR; Neuman)

Here's a question to ponder for next year's Syracuse basketball team: Who will be the team's leading scorer?

You could make the case for a number of different players. If Trevor Cooney shoots consistently, he is the favorite. Kaleb Joseph, Tyler Roberson and perhaps even Rakeem Christmas also could be in the mix.

Who will get points for the Orange is just one of the many questions facing next year's Syracuse squad. Coach Jim Boeheim will have to work in a lot of new faces, and most of them won't have much experience at the college level.

Waters Series: Ranking the Last 26 SU Hoops Teams

#11: 2008-09 Team Played Most Memorable Game in Orange History (PS; Waters)
NO. 11: 2008-09 TEAM

Overall record: 28-10
Conference record (finish): 11-7 (6th in Big East)
Post-season: Lost to Oklahoma in NCAA tournament's Sweet 16

The 2008-09 team had five players that averaged in double-figures but this was Jonny Flynn's team. The sophomore point guard averaged 17.4 points per game to lead the Orange. He handed out 254 assists (6.6 per game) and also led the team in steals with 54. He ranks 8th on Syracuse's all-time career assists list despite playing just two years in college.

Ranking the Top Moments From 2013-14 Season: #7 SU Blows Out UNC (the Juice; Cheng)
WHAT HAPPENED: When North Carolina forward James Michael McAdoo dominated inside early on, it appeared the Tar Heels were on their way toward their first ACC win.

But that’s when Syracuse’s defense took over.

Center Rakeem Christmas blocked four shots and SU’s 2-3 zone forced 14 turnovers as Syracuse cruised past the Tar Heels, 57-45. The loss dropped the once ranked Tar Heels to 0-3 in conference play, and 10-6 overall.

The Orange had to overcome an early six point deficit after McAdoo scored eight of his team’s first 10 points.

“We started pretty slow defensively,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “Our centers made a nice adjustment, and our defense pretty much took over at that point.”

Bud's Take On the Growth of Basketball Internationally (PS; Poliquin)

We've seen this for a while now in this town with the imported likes of Leo Rautins and Rony Seikaly and David Patrick and Elvir Ovcina and Kueth Duany and Kristof Ongenaet and Tyler Ennis, each of whom suited up for Syracuse University after having been plucked from beyond our borders and shores.

So the idea of basketball players from, oh, Belgium or Bermuda or Bosnia doing their thing in Central New York and elsewhere in our 50 states is not new new.
