SU Football Has Highest Ever APR Score (PS; Ditota)
Finish 8th in the ACC
Syracuse University's two prominent sports posted scores in the NCAA's annual Academic Progress Rate that will permit them to participate in the 2014-15 postseason.
The NCAA released its latest APR numbers today. Syracuse's men's basketball team registered a four-year score of 969. The football team scored 965.
Both were the highest scores ever posted for those SU sports since the NCAA started calculating the APR in 2004-05. SU's scores also beat the national averages of 957 for men's basketball and 956 for football.
To be eligible to participate in the post-season for the 2014-15 school year, the NCAA requires teams to post a four-year score of 930 or a two-year average of 940. Every Orange team reached that parameter.
"To see the consistent trend up in a challenging environment is tremendous," said SU athletic department chief communications officer Joe Giansante. "It's a credit to our coaches and our academic staff, in particular Tommy Powell, who has been a great addition to our staff."

ACC May Begin Playing 'Non-Conference' Games Against Other ACC Schools (PS; Axe)
Syracuse-Miami mentioned as one logical possibility
Atlantic Coast Conference schools are considering scheduling future nonconference games against other ACC schools in football.
The news was first reported by Brett McMurphy of ESPN.com.
"Because of the ACC's eight-game league schedule, non-primary crossover rivals in the Atlantic and Coastal divisions may only play each other once in an 11-year span. This prompted discussion at the ACC spring meetings about playing other ACC teams as nonconference opponents in future seasons."
"Everything's on the table," Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross told McMurphy at the ACC spring meetings taking place in Amelia Island, Florida.

Davante Davis
Film Study: Observations of Film on SU Verbal Davante Davis (PS; Mink)
Syracuse has an exciting prospect in the fold for the 2015 recruiting class in cornerback Davante Davis, but it will be fascinating to watch over the next year whether Syracuse can stave off some of the elite programs in the country.
Coming off an injury-shortened junior season, Davis transferred to Booker T. Washington High School in Miami this offseason, a national power that will assuredly garner him plenty of exposure throughout the recruiting process.
Not yet ranked by any of the major recruiting services, Davis recently picked up a scholarship offer from South Carolina, and Ohio State and Florida stopped by practice this week to evaluate Davis in person.

ACC Coaches Weigh Player Safety Issues (orlandosentinel.com; Murschel)

“We had some great information from some of the leading physicians in the world regarding the topic,” Addazio said on the concussion studies. “What we learned was there is a lot of misinformation out there that’s being talked about. That’s what you learn. It’s going to take some real live studies and real data has to be accumulated.”
The issue hits close to home for Addazio, who is not only a football coach, but the father of a football player. His son, Louie, plays tight end at Boston College.
“I consider all my players my kids so to speak,” Addazio said. “I’m into player welfare, and I’m into player safety. Those things resonate with me.”
The coaches have discussed potentially limited the number of full-padded practices during the season. The NCAA isn’t weighing a rule change, but Duke coach David Cutcliffe, who is chairman of the ACC coaches’ committee, said the league could soon take up the issue.
“I think we’re getting closer and closer,” Cutcliffe said of a potential limitation on full-pad practices. “I don’t think it’s going to be a standard just yet. I think we have three-to-four years of study to get science involved instead of opinion.
“We all want the same thing, we want the game to be safer. Everyone wants the players to be put in a best practices model, but that’s really what we’re looking at right now.”
But Cutcliffe added that a full-padded practice doesn’t always mean tackling or scrimmaging.
“Some of our full-padded practices really had no involvement with contact,” Cutcliffe said. “In my opinion, you have to differentiate not wearing pads means you’re scrimmaging. We already have a model in spring practice. You can wear pads, but you can’t tackle to the ground.”

Swofford Thinks Non-Conference Games Between ACC Schools Unlikely (ESPN; Maisel)
1. Now that the ACC has decided to play eight conference games instead of nine, ACC commissioner John Swofford, speaking with me Wednesday on the ESPNU College Football Podcast, sounded skeptical of the proposal that his members might play one another in a “non-conference” game. Swofford made a good point. That option has always been available, and the schools haven’t rushed to embrace it.

ND Realistic Expectations for 2014 Season (BR; Monaco)
Following the Pinstripe Bowl in December, Brian Kelly reflected on what constitutes a good versus a great season for Notre Dame football.
The Irish head coach looked back on the 9-4 campaign—a season highlighted by wins against USC, Michigan State and Arizona State, yet stained by close losses to Pittsburgh and Michigan.
Kelly’s evaluation?
“A good year that could have been a great year,” Kelly said. “I would say a couple of missed opportunities in some games where we very easily could have been a team that’s looking at double-digit wins,” Kelly said. “And that’s where we want to be every year.”

UMass On the Verge of Getting Evicted from MAC, Looks to Join the Sunbelt Conference (bcinterruption.com; Rubin)
UMass is in talks to become the 12th member of the Sun Belt Conference for football, per a report from CBS Sports' Jeremy Fowler. According to Commissioner Karl Benson, the Minutemen have had discussions with the league and interest exists.
The Sun Belt Conference only has 11 teams and needs a 12th in order to fulfill the requirement for a conference championship game. UMass is on the verge of being ejected from the MidAmerican Conference after 2015 because they would not commit to the league for all sports. UMass is regularly in the A-10 for all other sports. The A-10 does not sponsor football but is associated with the CAA, which is where the Minutemen originally were. They left the CAA when they reclassified to the FBS, though they remain affiliated with the league in lacrosse (meaning UMass plays in the A-10 for everything sponsored, the CAA for lacrosse, and the MAC for football).
