Red fixes one mistake (sticking with a lineup that’s working and not automatically subbing in guys) but then makes new ones. Even though that long 2nd lineup worked to increase defensive intensity and start the comeback and grab us the lead, you do have to eventually sub in one or two players. When we stagnated 2 times in a row on offense with a six point lead, it was time to put Freeman back in. Davis was playing well, but Freeman could have come in for Taylor or even Lampkin. I get that Freeman is a poor defender but he’s possibly our best scorer and one of our best rebounders. You gotta put him back in as soon as the offense started to stagnate after the run. Red hesitates too much. Also, how about calling a time out and making sure the guys are running set plays on those possessions to isolate Lampkin or Davis on the block or wing? Some other issues: 1.) Red looks frustrated on the sidelines. At the end of the game, you need to project energy and confidence to your team. He’s not doing that. How did he not learn this lesson from JB? Every Cuse fan understood that about JB and that it worked. JB would yell at guys for mistakes but then would quickly refocus them onto the next possession and project calm and confidence. 2.) Red’s still figuring out substitutions and lineups that will work and doesn’t always seem to have a feel for what works. 3.) He does seem to be making some adjustments. Finally starting Choppa, which everyone had been calling for after the Cornell and Tennessee games. 4.) another JB philosophy: Sometimes you do have to give up defensive lineup advantages for offense. Taylor is our best defender and he needs to play. But he gives us very little on offense right now. When we stagnated a few possessions in a row, he needed to take Taylor out of the game and put in Donnie to give us an offensive spark. 5.) I get that Bell is struggling with his shot. But why are we not running more actions, flare screens and back screens, to get this guy open looks?! It’s mystifying.
