If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas. Every team deals with injuries and not getting the player they hoped and dreamed on. The evaluation of players and expecting them to be something they haven't previously shown is what is glaringly awful in combination with whatever the plan is for the offense and defense.
