To foul or not to foul

My alma mater Mercer Bears were up by 3 against UCSB in the Great Alaska Shootout and elected not to foul and of course, UCSB knocked down a three at the buzzer and went on to win in overtime. Bob Hoffman is a great coach - you don't do what he has done at Mercer without being one. But he blew that one. I am firmly in the foul in that situation side of the discussion.
