When it joins the Atlantic Coast Conference, Syracuse University will not play any conference home games outside the Carrier Dome. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, seeking to clarify statements made by SU chancellor Nancy Cantor, said the Orange would never play an ACC home game in New York City. “That was never a part of us getting in the ACC,’’ Boeheim said on Wednesday. “It never was. It was never in the discussion. We absolutely would not take conference games to New York City. It was never the intent.’’ Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross echoed Boeheim’s statement. Gross said Syracuse’s goal was to have a New York City venue host the ACC Tournament at some point. “That’s our goal,’’ Gross said. Gross also mentioned playing a non-conference game against St. John’s. He added that he would do the same with Georgetown, but preferred to schedule a home-and-home series with the Hoyas. Syracuse has scheduled some “home’’ football games at the New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey. The Orange will play Southern California next year, Penn State in 2013, and Notre Dame in 2014 and 2016. “With the football packages, it might be the only way to get Notre Dame to play and you make more money there,’’ said Boeheim. “If Duke comes here (for basketball), we’re going to make more money playing here than in New York City.’’ Boeheim also noted that when Syracuse and Pittsburgh eventually join the ACC, the conference’s membership will increase to 14 schools. That large a conference will play an unbalanced schedule. That could mean a school like Duke or North Carolina might play at the Carrier Dome just twice every four years. “If we’re playing Duke once at home every three years,’’ Boeheim said, “you’re not going to take the Duke game out (of the Carrier Dome).’’ So despite Cantor’s comments, Boeheim said Syracuse fans in the Central New York can relax. When the Orange joins the ACC, the Blue Devils and Tar Heels will come to the Carrier Dome. “We play games in New York,’’ Boeheim said. “We’ve always done that and we’ll continue to do that. The Jimmy V. The NIT. But there was never talk of playing a conference game there.’’ http://blog.syracuse.com/orangebasketball/2011/09/home_sweet_dome_boeheim_gross.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
