I don't think age difference is the problem. In boxing and wrestling you have weight classes, but in NBA you have 38 yo playing against 19 yo all the time not sure why that is an issue, and the Olympics don't have a problem with age differences either. The front and center, fundamental criteria for college sports, should be whether someone is a student first and the sport participation is secondary. I think this is where they define the line between amateur and pros. All the rules that NCAA had were to make sure there is no pay for play, but in reality pay for play is not an issue as long as the athlete is a real student here for higher learning. Therefore, I am ok with LeBron, after retiring from the NBA, to go back to college for a degree and play in CBB for a few years. But there is no way to really qualify someone who is a student first sport participation second. All the other rules NCAA has were basically saying if you are willing to play for free you must be a student. Well that just moved the payments under the table and when NIL came into the picture everything fell apart. I think they need to go back to the drawing board and rework how they qualify a student athlete. For example if you want to play college sport you need to be a degree seeking student. Get rid of the one and dones let them go right to the G league or NBA. Heck, take all your NIL earnings and put it into escrow, once you get your degree the fund is released, if you don't earn a degree the money is forfeited and goes to some charity. If you are not here to be a student you shouldn't be playing college sports. That will turn college sports back to a place for 4 year degree seeking students. Either that or completely detached college sport teams from the schools. The teams can field players however they like with no NCAA oversight no need to be enrolled in college and become the new improved G league. They are just loosely affiliated with the school because they are located there and rent the facilities from the schools.
