Why don't they do the "pit" in college bands? All of the larger HS bands in the west have them. The pit is comprised of marimbas, vibraphones, glockenspiels, synthesizer, and any large orchestral instruments (gong, timpani drums, steels, etc.)

All HS bands in the East have pits as well.

While I don’t have a knowledge beyond my own experience as a student and instructor, I think the big reasons are transport and storage.

Docked equipment like keyboards and timps requires more than just the person playing it to move it on and off the field. College bands lack parents and other volunteers to schlep them around. This is exacerbated by the fact that college bands entering the field is a still a big deal (unlike modern HS band), and they don’t want to sap their numbers for this moment by detailing members to haul on pit equipment.

The storage question is basically - where are you going to put all of this stuff during the game? At the Dome, space out of bounds is already limited, and having stationary musical equipment on the sidelines that players could run into is a no-go. Storing it in the bowels of the Dome is also tough - there’s only one main tunnel to the field, plus the two locker room entrances. I’d imagine lining that main tunnel with stationary drums would not make the fire marshal happy, and you wouldn’t want to compete with the teams for entry/exit space.
