spread to run works. run the ball in the red zone, precommit to not punt so much and turn "passing downs" into runs.

We're 25th in the country in rushing yards and only 49th in attempts. What are we good at? Why are 48 teams running more than SU? USC runs the ball more than SU. WEST VIRGINIA RUNS THE BALL MORE

We're 19th in yards per rush. DO THAT MORE

we dont need to throw the ball 33 times a game. hard to believe that 74 teams throw the ball more than that per game. in 2000, 32.8 attempts per game was 43rd most in the country

Our rushing totals don't come from having more plays than other teams. we are not the tempo team that McDonald wanted to be. 62nd in plays per game.

I promise I'm not provoking you, but is it possible that part of the reason why we run the ball so well is that we do pass enough to force defenses to account for us throwing the ball? If so, and we pass less, we wouldn't run as successfully.

Agreed. Figure out a way to run the ball even more and quit trying to make your qb do what he isn't good at. Throw some longer passes, a very few short ones but the mid range passing game is terrible. Probably why we stink so bad in the red zone. In addition, just go for it on 4th on their side of the field, especially if you are trying a 35-50 yard field goal, just don't. I hate square peg round hole, mix in a few two back sets.

No

if you line up in a spread 4 wide, they aren't going to leave your WR wide open even if you run every time. spread to run, not spread and pass to run.

we don't need to throw bubble screens into coverage. just keep running and running and running. if they stop covering, then throw it.

you can cut out half the passes and they'd still need to cover guys.

all those teams that run the ball more like WEST VIRGINIAAAAAAAA, are they not setting up the run with the pass enough?

teams cover Navy's receivers

if teams start cheating and keep cheating, then throw it 33 times. they're not, they're sitting there waiting for our screens because McDonald is not smart

boston college never throws, they still get 450 ypg and are 7th in rushing.

I think we are close, I really do. Call me crazy. Over commit on the running game that it's impossible not to pass, something will give.

Passing attempts a little skewed from being behind last two. Attempts aren't really that much of a problem to me, it's production, goes back to the post CMU post where I pointed out the so little for so much issue.

Play profile I'd like to see is 48/32. 5 ypa and 7.5 per pass attempt = 240 and 240. If they could get there, recent experience not withstanding, I'd like our chances.

Biggest issues are still 3rd down and scoring.

Good stuff.

Dixon should also be our kicker, hell our holder to.

i think teams panic too much about passing after falling behind. especially considering that shafer is so willing to punt. time stops mattering to him on 4th down. some of these punts this year are so dumb

but i'm not sure that applies here- they throw more in the first half than they do in the second half this season.

i think they would do better on 3rd down and score more if they ran more and threw and kicked less

We saw that, ND loaded up to take away the run (which they did) and force SU to pass, which didn't work out so well. Hunt showed he could make some big time throws and generate yds, McDonald needs to figure out how to get the full package (3rd down and conversions) fixed.

Mid range is terrible? Some of his best passes have been curls between the numbers and the hash, the cross to Lewis was great.

Weak on third across the board, but 7 or more is the kiss of death. 50/50 on first, run on second and long, pass on 2nd and short, and try to get to manageable downs and distances.

the horrible bubble screens have lead to lots of 3rd and 7s or more. we don't need to extend our running game with WR. god that quote made/makes me crazy. bubble screens are/should be simply short passes to uncovered WR. the running game doesn't need extending.

One thing I noticed is that Hunt was determined to make throws. Mow many times did he tuck and run vs. Notre Dame? Very, very few times. His best run was the TD run. He was a little tight in his decision -making. Really would have loved to see him take off more on plays designed to be pass plays. So dangerous, especially if LBs are forced to follow RBs around.

the more we throw only deeper the more the safety has to stay back and the more we can run.. when you throw all short passes the safety is coming forward for run or pass.

our biggest issue is that we can, but as soon as the D decides we are running we struggle. we have no power run just spread them out and hope gully can make someone miss. For all that he made the first guy miss almost every time against ND. so had we gone 4 wide more teams have to play at least 1 safety back, west has shown he can make the release to get the 20-30 pass, Estime can too. if teams play 1 deep now its 6 on 7 in the box. and unless a Oline whiffs Hunt is going to gain yds. if teams want to cheat and play cover zero then we have to be willing to send 1 guy deep and hold the pass block for a couple counts with the RB.

What stood out the most for me on Hunt's ability to throw are the inordinate amount of uncatchable throws to the backs when they sweep wide. He did this last year as well. Several of those could have, potentially, gone for big yards if he connected.

Hate to agree with Millhouse too much, but he's right. The run to pass ratio in the 2nd half of the MD and CMU games is probably the right ratio. Give up on the bubble screen unless it's what the defense gives you... Throw to West/Ish when we get single coverage to stop the run. Quick slants to blow up the run blitz. Counter the zone read keeper with Hunt into some nice double moves down the field.
