This looks like the lazy zone we saw for a bunch of years after the national title. I realize MCW and others aren't here any longer, but move your feet. We NEED the steals and fast break opportunities!

I was expecting us to go to the full court press a LOT sooner. We had a dead zone tonight. Understandably with a trip to Maui on deck and a lifeless 10k in the stands

Ya... what was up with that? JB always pulls the trigger early against inferior opponents.

Yeah, kind of an odd game to watch. I felt like I was watching Vermont in that horrific tourney game for awhile as we just stood around watching as they slowly (very slowly) took control of the game. The guards seemed lifeless at the top of the zone for big stretches. Which was made all the more noticeable when they got a bit livelier toward the end.

Hey hey hey! The crowd helped them win it tonight. True, we were lifeless in the first half. But the Dome was as loud as I have ever heard it in the last 5 minutes. True, it was the sound of thousands of throats shrieking in desperation, but it was loud!

There are a couple massive issues with the zone right now. Closeouts on shots have been extremely slow and lazy, and players are either over rotating, allowing the player an easy way around them or too slow rotating and allowing an easy open bucket. The biggest concern, is that it isnt all the freshman or younger players making these mistakes. The interior defense was just awful tonight.

Also, I was looking for the stats but I couldn't find fast break points online. I just dont remember any run-outs in the first few games, which is something we usually excel at. I think our first fast break points of the night was Grants steal and pass to Silent G for the tieing layup. Thats a big concern.

Disagree. The starting guards are averaging 5 steals per game. Not top comp, but pretty good numbers. Check what our guards averaged the past several seasons.

More importantly I think is to prevent (or at least contest) the pass to the post. Last night was the first time in forever that a team passed inside at will against us. Our guards MUST play better defense and recognize what the other team is doing. To their credit, they prevented the 3, but at a pretty high cost. We need to get better at preventing the pass to the post.

It's the shooters vision and deflections that are hurting this zone. 6' 2" guards don't murk up that vision like a 6'6" guy does. Add longer arms as well...it's going to be a different zone and what will help quite a bit is Gbinije giving Ennis rest because if he's playing 38+ he won't nearly be as active as he would if he's playing 32 minutes.

I am more concerned with the amount of 3's that are being hit on the top of our zone. I posted this a few days ago, but last season we had 4 total games giving up double digit 3 pointers. We gave that up in the first 3 games alone. St Francis only had 5, but they were mostly from the top/wings of the zone. Ennis and Cooney are a pretty steep drop off from MCW and Triche

Cooney had 3 steals last night ... they are creating a few turnovers ... the problem is that they are not ending in fast break/transition points
