Here is my annual post on the top team Syracuse performers, (per game for minutes and per 40 minutes for the rest), in every category since 1982-83, (which how far back the numbers in the Media Guide go), as well as a "Dream Team". The players on this year's team are in bold. Where this year's leader was not in the top 10, I noted who it was.

COMMENTS:

Derrick Coleman was the most statistically productive player we’ve had since he showed up on campus. Only Billy Owens in his best year came close to the level of performance of Coleman in his last three years. It’s interesting that the most offensively efficient player in 24 seasons was Stevie Thompson, a 6-2 player with no jump shot and a terrible free throw shooter. Stevie avoided what he couldn’t do well and did what he did better than anyone- run the floor for dunks and lay-ups. He was a great finisher and so quick they couldn’t catch up with him to foul him. Lawrence Moten is #3. He was a player who kept moving for 40 minutes and didn’t care if a jump shot was a two pointer or a three pointer, as long as it was open. Both were surpassed by Eric Santifer in 1982-83. He was good at penetrating, working the baseline and could hit a medium range jumper. He also had Leo Rautins passing to him.

THE DREAM TEAM These are chosen by position using net points. Each player is represented only once by his best year. I limited myself to starters.

CENTERS

Starter- Rony Seikaly 86-87 22.4
Reserve- Etan Thomas 98-99 21.9

FORWARDS

Starters- Derrick Coleman 88-89 28.5, Billy Owens 90-91 26.1
Reserves- Carmelo Anthony 02-03 22.9, John Wallace 94-95 22.7

GUARDS

Starters- Sherman Douglas 86-87 21.1, Eric Santifer 82-83 21.0
Reserves- Pearl Washington 85-86 20.9 Stevie Thompson 1988-89 19.9

from your stats, biggest hair pullers, take the good with the bad: Brower and Lewis.

Assists per 40 minutes, nos. 5 and 8: oh my.

(Though I do feel that Edwards gets a bad rap on this board, I don't remember too many positive contributions from Josh Wright, especially as a freshman.)

...

REBOUNDS per 40 minutes

1) Coleman 86-87 13.8 2) Coleman 89-90 13.7 3) Coleman 87-88 13.6 4) Onuaku 05-06 13.2 5) Lewis 82-83 and Harris 06-07 13.1 7) Ongenaet 08-09 12.6 8) Coleman 12-13 12.4 9) Walker 86-87 and Owens 90-91 12.2

...

Also, I think Derrick should hold the top four spots - I have him with 13.768 per 40 minutes in 1989.

Good stuff, as always.

You are correct. Fixed. Thanks.

Great work up. Thanks. It's interesting that for the guards none were good 3 pt. shooters. While we have have had several excellent PG's we have had actually had few, if any, big time shooting guards. While Stevie Thompson was not a real good perimeter shooter he could get to the rim AND FINISH better than anyone in SU history (at least for the last 30+years). One of my all time favorites.
