Athletics administrator Torrey Ball '11, MS'12 is returning to his alma mater as the deputy athletics director for business development. An Orange football defensive end from 2009 through 2011, Ball brings intercollegiate athletics marketing and external leadership experience from multiple Power Five schools, including his most recent role as associate athletics director of external operations at the University of Virginia, to his new role at Syracuse.

"Torrey has demonstrated growth in athletics administration, advancing in marketing and external roles at multiple Power Five schools and at Marquette University," said Director of Athletics John Wildhack. "He has a tremendous affinity to Syracuse University, the athletics program and the community. In this role he will be focused on revenue generation for our athletics department. We welcome Torrey, his wife, Courtney, and their son, Langston, back to Syracuse."

At Syracuse, Ball will be responsible for the identification of business and revenue opportunities for athletics, including maximizing all current revenue streams and enhancing overall revenue generation. He will oversee the Orange athletics marketing and trademark licensing departments and will be the primary liaison with Syracuse Learfield Sports Properties.

Is deputy like junior ranger? What does deputy AD do/mean? Just curious

He has been hired to fill Andrew Goodrich’s role previously held by Chris Fuller.
Herm’s role has been greatly reduced over the years. He handles special projects like Covid protocols and act like a travel coordinator.
Kirsten takes care of women’s sports specific issues including Title IX compliance. She was recently given the bump in title with little change in responsibilities.
Kristen is the CFO.

Torrey will oversee day to day operations and will serve as John’s right hand man. I expect him to have a significant media presence and to be the prime candidate (and IMO the only one of the current deputies) to succeed John when the time comes.

Associate ADs are next on the org chart followed by Assistant ADs.

And aren't some of the assistants/associates responsible for the day to day of specific sports to share the load? I'm sure Wildhack can't handle all 18 by himself. Like I have a friend who is a deputy AD at UAB in charge of strength and conditioning, academic services, sports medicine and nutrition, and is the sport administrator for baseball, softball, track and field, cross-country, bowling, rifle and the dance/cheer teams.

Of course. And they all report up to the Deputy AD. Just trying to answer the initial question asking what a Deputy does. In fact a lot of John’s time is spent managing up while most of Andrew and now Torrey’s time is spent managing down.
