This must be rounded to the nearest $1m, not $100k

melo has made 100M more than the rest of that list combined!

$44.7 equates to 44 Million and roughly $700,000 (rounded).

Rounded to the nearest million, it would be $45.
Got it - I missed the "expressed in millions" right up top.

We really need another Carmelo type NBA player
Agreed but an Anthony Davis type player will do.

Melo, while we can debate his eliteness all we want, is a straight up brand name NBA player. His fame combined with his talent is what makes him such a rarity.

Interested what people think would have happened to Grant if he stayed one more year - first rounder? Would he have made more than $1.7m so far?

No. He will make $1.7M by the end of this year. McCullough went in the first round. His salary this year is $1.1. Comparable to what Jerami might make if he stayed an extra year. So Jerami is already $600,000 ahead. Jerami's contract for the next 2 years calls for another $2M. I didn't include it since I don't know that it's guaranteed yet. But there is little doubt that it will be. So in 2018, Jerami should still be ahead of what he would likely make if he stayed an extra year.

I'd be interested in your thoughts concerning the decision process a player would carry out as he decides whether or not to jump. I think the basics are pretty simple. There are four draft categories:

1. Lottery
2. First Round
3. Second Round
4. Undrafted

The first step is to get a good estimate of your status today. You then need to determine whether staying in college another year is likely to move you up to the next draft category. If yes, you should seriously consider staying. If no, you should go.

Applied to Mal, he needs to answer two questions. Is he a likely first rounder this year? Is he a likely lottery pick next year? If yes and no, he should go and get the extra year's salary. If yes and yes, he should stay for a better initial contract.

And that's just his NBA earnings right? He's been a Jordan Brand endorser his entire career and has the 5th longest list of signature sneakers ever for a basketball player after Jordan, Kobe, Iverson, and Lebron.

Don't forget to factor in the potential injury next season. Thats always part of the equation.

.

This is a pretty common line of thinking around here. I still think what also needs to be taken into consideration is...will coming out in another year or two increase his chances to stick in the league? Or does it not matter? If you're not a major prospect and you're not getting on the court*, you can disappear in a hurry. Being ready to make an impact is a very important factor.

* edit - or if you are getting on the court but are sucking because you're not ready for that level of ball yet

There has to be a lower level of endorsement income not included for many of them. Maybe a Mike Hopkins-level local car ad or something. If that means a free car, then that's like another $30,000, right? And maybe for only a few hours of work (minus manager/agent's commission, of course).

I thought Tyler Ennis and MCW had already started racking up endorsement contracts, with the latter actually living off that money, with the playing salary going into a trust until age 25. Even the odd mall appearance after they're done can net what amounts to a week's pay for most of us.

People inexplicably keep calling these guys losers. I don't get it.

I wish I could. I'm sure the check cleared though, so can't blame him!

Totally. Of course the SU guy endorses Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I love Melo...but this is a head scratcher.

44cuse

I'm not nearly as selfish. Give me "ONLY" a 100m+ guy and I'll be ecstatic (looking at you Mr. Battle)

If you do that you have to factor in potential Final 4 MVP & Wooden POY, that's always part of it too

I'm amazed that Kris Joesph did not have a more successful NBA career. And Demetris Nichols. I thought those guys were really good players in CBB.

We were lucky to get one melo, I would take another Dion Waiters.
I would take 20 more Dions at Syracuse, but high school kids don't want to be the next Dion Waiters. Many of them want to be Carmelo and want to play at Syracuse because of him.
