In the East to Pittsburgh

Syracuse - 360 miles
NCA - 477

WVU - 75
Gonzaga - +++

Ohio State - 75
Loyola - 245

Really doesn't look like much of a geographic advantage for SU to be in Pittsburgh. Clearly the biggest advantages are to Ohio State (the #2 seed) and WVU (the #10 seed). Even Loyola, the #15 seed is closer than SU. And the difference between SU (6 hours) and UNC Asheville (8 hours) seems pretty insignificant.

Brief interesting article on the role of geographic distance and bearing on outcome:

Interesting study, but I think there may be some errors in the data. For example, it lists the distance from Syracuse to Springfield, MA (where the unnamed happened in 2005) at 668 miles instead of 228 miles.

Well, sure it's only 228 miles if you take a direct route.
