Although it was only a scrimmage and most of the 3 point shots taken were not replete with a hand in the grille, a game that counts situation, or on a strange away court, I believe that Trevor Cooney is going to have an outstanding year with much improved shooting and tenacious disruptive defensive play and he will be that player we'd all hoped he would be.

I think a lot of the criticism he received last year was not deserved. By the numbers, historically, many previous Syracuse 3 point specialists had a shooting % that was comparable to his last season. If he can play a little more relaxed this year on account of having logged some PT and experience, he is going to be a very important component on this team.

He has to hit threes to help give us 1) another scorer and 2) spread the floor for our offense to be able to move and penetrate better.

He has to hit his outside shots. Hope it happens. Looks like he has worked hard. Now it just has to come together when the games count.

I look forward to him making certain fans eat some crow, and I bet most of them would probably be fine with that if it puts Ws in our record.

I got frustrated with him on a game to game basis, as I do with any player,
but never saw a reason to act like the guy didnt belong on a D1 court. After all, there were/are other areas of his game that are pretty solid.

If he can keep this up against strong competition and Gbinije becomes a consistent contributor, watch out! With our strength at the forward spots, we just need our 2 guards to be consistent, we dont need these guys to do anything spectacular.

I think Ennis is smart enough to know that he needs to get Trevor going early. And he is good enough to get Trevor in a position to score. Once that kid gets rolling, then ride him, because he will hit them in bunches. I think all the guys are aware of this, and the more his confidence grows, the more consistent he will become.

I think one of the problems last year was that our beloved Gerry raised expectations, saying he was better than Gerry was. Now, Gerry as a freshman was the awesomest possum! How many freshmen come in and produce like that? But Gerry said it, so we all waited, enthralled. But Cooney had a rough year, apparently mainly for psychological reasons. But this year he is confident. Gerry was right, and Gerry was wrong. Cooney has the talent, but Cooney didn't have that magical heart of steel that Gerry had. This year though? Looks like a whole other story.

I also have noticed, as stated by orangefog, that Ennis and Trevor have a nice connection going. They seem to be in sync. If this can keep up, I see the lights of Dallas in our future!

It is hard to even accuratly state how much more dangerous we are a sa team offensively if Cooney is a deadly 3pt shooter.

I was very happy to see that the guys who will shot the most 3's for us this year looked very good shooting the ball last night. Trevor, CJ, MikeG and BJ all looked great shooting jumpers. Grant was off obviously and Ennis didn't take any but if the other guys are threats they can both hit enough open 3's to make teams guard them.

He deserved criticism last year -- took bad shots, moving laterally, wasn't much good as a passer, over-rated on defense.
But this is a new year, looks like he has improved, and obviously his role is different. He will be a starter & can settle down and get and take better shots. His play is one key to how good this team can be. As the best 3 point shooter on the team (by far), he has a big opportunity. I am expecting big things --

I'm going on record any agreeing with others that he will break out year... I'll take 37% and 85 threes... 42% and 100 threes would give me boner soup though... lol

It's not a secret why Ennis and Cooney both played on the orange team last night. They will be the starting back court this year. I think Trevor rises to the occasion. LGO!

Have you seen CJ Fair shoot the 3 last year and so far this year? Cooney may end up being our best 3 point shooter but there will be no "by far" the way CJ shoots it.

As of right now, CJ is our best 3pt shooter - by far. I really hope TC turns out to be better.

I've been on the Cooney bandwagon since we got him. I 100% believe it is all mental with him. The kid can shoot, it's a confidence issue. He just needs to get going early and not look back. I think the first handful of games will be critical to how his season goes. I'm going to stick with him and believe that he'll end up being a very productive player for the next 3 years.

It wasn't only confidence. Last year, he was taking some difficult shots, moving laterally to the basket. He couldn't settle into the flow of games, when he was getting 3 minutes and out.
When he gets more in the mix of defense, handling the ball some, driving some, and taking better shots, he will have more success. Playing with Ennis, getting comfortable in his role, knowing he will get 28 minutes/game, will make a difference.
