Sophomore Year (2017): Played in the season opener versus Central Connecticut State (9/1) ... Did not record any statistics.

Freshman Year (2016): Played in five games ... Made his college debut in the season opener against Colgate (9/2) ... Career-high three tackles versus Louisville (9/9) ... Had two tackles and recovered a fumble against Florida State (11/19).

Pure guess, simply not big enough for our D now. Best of luck to him, and hope he lands someplace good.

Great job young man. Hope he does well at his future school.

Troy was one of my favorite recruits of that class. Thought he would do great on the field. It didn't turn out that way after the coaching change but congrats to him on a very impressive job getting his degree in 3 years. Good luck whereever he ends up.

Great young man caught in the transition between 2 systems. I wish him great success wherever he ends up!

This puts us at 61 returning scholarship players, according to the recruiting board (thanks for keeping that list pinned! Extremely helpful).

24 to get to 85, minus the 15 NLIs during the early signing period means we have 9 left to give.

Subtract the Michigan State transfer, and that makes it 8.

The two RB commits... I would guess (and it is exactly that) that one of them makes it here, the other does not. Meaning we'll see seven more recruits sign, barring any other departures.

Again just a guess but I wouldn't be surprised if there might be one or two more that end up leaving. But even with that, we'll be at or close to the 85 mark, which is great considering the roster needed to be flipped and has been, for the most part.

All the best to Troy. By all accounts a great kid and teammate.

Back to home, with the decommit from Smith this suddenly makes LB depth an area for concern, doesn't it? Even if both of these developments were anticipated that leaves just 9 on the projected roster (I have Whitner back at DB.) I would expect to see at least one if not two LBs added before August unless I'm missing another potential position switch.

I think Whitner was moved due to injury. I'd bet he slides back to LB.

Graduated in 3 years with a business Degree, good for him! If I were him id put some feelers out to playing my final 2 years of ball at Harvard or one of the Ivy's and get that MBA.

Including one walk on, all three LB positions go four deep. There's lots of unproven commodities, but the staff is likely comfortable with what they have.

All conversation suggests Smith wasn't coming here before signing day and was replaced by Allison, while Henderson didn't get any run last season, even on specials.

The staff knew Smith was not going to make it here. His decommit was expected. The staff added Texas LB Tre Allison in his place and also brought in the JUCO Lakiem Williams.

Why not WMU or Notre Dame? All depends what restrictions they place on transfer.

Why not?

Maybe like the rest of the transfers out, he wasn't good enough for a WMU or Notre Dame. Or, he didn't want to sit a year. We'll never know. That said, besides Samuels who'd be a positive addition as a rotational interior D-Lineman on the playing field, it looks like addition by subtraction (by addition again; opening up scholarship/redshirt/juco opportunities) to this Scott Shafer as a person and D-Coordinator fan.
