Years ago I owned a business that had a division in East Lansing. Because we had spent a considerable amount acquiring the company prior to merging it into ours I decided to live in East Lansing for a period of time. To make a long story short I built a home in a sub division called White Hills Woods Estates. The builder was a great guy whos son Bill had played B-ball for the Spartans so we had that in common. Anyway the home that i built was directly next to Nick Sabans. Nick was very reserved a great guy but a true introvert. My oldest Daughter was just a baby at the time and one of Nicks Daughters baby sat for us. Well Nick invited Kate and I to a function where some recruits were being entertained and one of them was a RB, Macintosh who at the time was down to Syracuse, State and maybe one other school. Anyway i remember getting a few minutes with the kid and just gushing about Syracuse and telling him how much i liked Syracuse and upstate NY vs Lansing. Well segway a few months later and Nick is talking with me and a few of the guys at the club about his recruiting class and he says that it went pretty much as planned with the exception of this RB out of Conn who ended up picking Syracuse.

Now that's funny.

kc, do you still talk to saban?
No i dont our wifes were the glue and i lost my wife to cancer 10 years ago. They sent a beautiful note but we lost touch. Nick is a very good guy. Really intense but in a very quiet way. One of those guys that never felt the need to talk and didnt mind dead space in a conversation. Good husband and father as well. One other guy in the neighborhood was an OL coach who also had some ties to Syracuse. I met him at the club as well and just remember him being gone all of the time on the road recruiting mind block nice guy was the OL coach for Saban. Do you know Nick?

Sorry about the loss.

It seems like Nick has changed quite a bit. If you're bringing in kids to play for you and you place them on "medical absence" even when they can still play, just so that you can replace them with a better player, that's pretty shady.

One other thing that he said that always stuck with me was that he was completely about the program. Im not saying that he didnt care about his players because i wasnt close to the Mstate program but i can tell you he is one major hard ass so i guess it doesnt surprise me.

I am so sorry about your wife. Cancer is horrible.

No, I have seen him at different camps and clinics but never met him. It is just interesting to hear your relationship with him. People who I know that have met him say that he is a good guy but cold kinda and would do absolutely anything to win and make sure he is the boss.

I would agree with that. I can tell you that his wife is a total gem she is the outgoing one the glue with the kids and im sure she is great with recruits as well. I bet that Nick always has counted on his assistants to do the majority of the selling.

Thx BK 76. Yes it was very tough girls were young 8 and 3 at the time. I was blessed to have a great family and work situation that allowed me the time to be with them and for us to heal. We met on M Street years ago she was a young Prof in the art dept and i was just starting my company. Used to set the woods on fire at all the usual crime spots. Prior to meeting me she had never been to any sporting events and i had never been to an opening or pour. The odd couple at best. Anyway she turned me onto Art and within a year she was wearing something from mannys to bed each night. Great times.

Wow, great story. So sorry for your loss... cancer has touched my life more than I care to think about. I can't imagine how it would have been with a young family such as yours. Too bad you couldn't convince Nick what a great school SU was as well!!

Great story, thanks for sharing. I believe you are referring to Stoutland as the offensive line coach.
