Neil Gold, Second Biggest Fan of SU Hoops on the Planet
Story Behind Neil Gold's Purchase of the 'Ejection Jacket' (PS; Ditota)
Neil Gold had heard rumors that the jacket Jim Boeheim wore for his now infamous ejection from the Duke basketball game would be among the auction items available at the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation's annual Basket Ball.Gold, who stores his collection of at least 100 SU basketball-themed items in his Manlius basement devoted to the Orange, attended the Boeheim gala on Saturday with his wife, Helene. He had every intention, he said, of scoring the winning bid on that jacket.
"For somebody like me — this was perfect," said Gold. "It was the first time we played Duke at Cameron. It was the first time Coach was thrown out of a real game. It's part of Syracuse basketball lore now."...

SU Hoops Recruit Moutstapha Diagne Could Decide on a College Next Month (PS; Ditota)
Moustapha Diagne, the 6-foot-9 forward/center from Pope Paul XXIII High School in Sparta, N.J., could decide on a college destination some time next month, coach Jason Hasson said by telephone this morning.
Syracuse has long courted Diagne, who would give the Orange's alreadyimpressive haul of 2015 recruits a necessary big man.
SU assistant coach Adrian Autry was in Sacramento over the weekend to watch Diagne play in an EYBL tournament. Orange coaches, said Hasson, have heavily recruited Diagne.
"Syracuse is definitely still on his list," Hasson said...

SU Sneaks Into One Early Top 25 and Out of Another (PS; Waters)
If two very early rankings are an indication of anything, the Syracuse Orange basketball team will be right on the fringe of the Top 25 when next season rolls around.
ESPN.com writer Eamonn Brennan and CBSsports.com columnist Gary Parrish both came out with their own extremely premature Top 25 rankings for the 2014-15 season on Monday.
Brennan had Syracuse at No. 21 on his list, while Parrish left the Orange out of his Top 25 (and one) rankings. Both Brennan and Parrish produced the lists on Monday after the NBA's early entry deadline had passed over the weekend.
Parrish's rankings came without explanation, but Brennan offered this thought on Syracuse:
The Orange took not one, but two big-time hits in the draft-decision window. The first was point guard Tyler Ennis; the second, forward and sixth man Jerami Grant. Ennis was the most crucial, as it leaves Syracuse without an obvious point guard replacement...
USA Today 2014-15 Preseason Top 25 Has Syracuse at #21 (Gleeson, Auerbach)
21. Syracuse (28-6, 14-4): The Orange lose All-American C.J. Fair, star point guard Tyler Ennis and third option Jerami Grant to the NBA. That leaves Trevor Cooney and Rakeem Christmas to grow into larger roles. Coach Jim Boeheim has reeled in another star-studded recruiting class headlined by power forward Chris McCullough, who will be the perfect fit to play on the bottom of Syracuse's vaunted 2-3 zone. Kaleb Joseph, a big and physical floor general, is set to fill the void of Ennis.

Worst Game Ever in Carrier Dome Might Have Been FSU's 82-67 NIT Blowout Win Over an SU Team That Appeared to Give Up
Mike Waters #26 SU Team: The 1996-97 Team Remembered for Ugly NIT Loss (PS; Waters)
I've been covering the Syracuse University basketball program for the past 25 seasons. Actually, it's 25 and a half since I started on the beat mid-way through the 1988-89 season.
That's a total of 26 teams. The list includes the 2003 NCAA championship team, the 1996 team that made it to the NCAA title game and the 2013 Final Four squad. There were a few other extremely talented teams that for various reasons came up just short of the Final Four — the 1989, 2010 and 2012 teams. And then there were a few teams that failed to make it to the NCAA tournament.
Over the next two-plus weeks, I'll rank the teams that I've covered. That's 1 through 26 or, more precisely, 26 through 1. The rankings begin today with No. 26 and will continue with two teams per day.
Which teams would you rank among the best in the past 25 (actually 26) years? Let us know what you think of the rankings in the comments section.
NO. 26: 1996-97 TEAM
Overall record: 19-13
Big East record (finish): 9-9 (4th in Big East 7 division)
Postseason: Lost to Florida State in 1st round of NIT
Best player: Todd Burgan
Otis Hill led the team with 15.7 points per game, but Burgan averaged 15.1 points and also pulled down a team-best 7.6 rebounds per game. Burgan, a junior, also made 36.3 percent of his 3-point shots...
Craig Forth (51) Would See Better Days in the Following Season
Mike Waters #25 SU Team: The 2001-02 Team Melted Down the Stretch (PS; Waters)
NO. 25: 2001-02 TEAM
Overall record: 23-13
Big East record (finish): 9-7 (3rd in Big East West division)
Postseason: Lost to South Carolina in NIT semifinals
Best player: Preston Shumpert
While Syracuse struggled during the 2001-02 season, Preston Shumpert had himself an outstanding senior season. The small forward averaged 20.7 points per game. Carmelo Anthony and Hakim Warrick are the only SU players who have averaged more since Shumpert's last year. Shumpert also led the team in rebounding at 6.1 per game and he made 37.8 percent of his 3-point attempts. He remains the 8th all-time leading scorer in Syracuse history with 1,907 points.
Unsung hero: Kueth Duany
Duany would get a ton of credit the following year as the fifth-year senior and grizzled veteran on the 2003 NCAA championship team. But Duany started all 36 games in the 2001-02 season and averaged 12.2 points per game. His 5.3 rebounds per game were second only to Shumpert...
