Coach K, Jerry Colangelo, JB, Tom Thibodeau and Monty Williams Watch Team USA Practice

JB, Other USA Basketball Coaches Will Speak at the Pentagon This Week (PS; Ditota)

Jim Boeheim is off to Washington this week to participate in a panel discussion on leadership at the Pentagon. He'll also sneak in a White House visit earlier in the day.

The Syracuse coach will be part of a program designed by the NBA and USA Basketball that pairs seven accomplished college basketball coaches with 400 military members in conversations about leadership. A release from USA Basketball explains the nature of that discussion, to be moderated by ESPN's Jay Bilas:

The open panel discussion will focus on challenges facing championship-level teams and the U.S. military. Among the topics will be how to motivate and inspire people towards pursuit of a common goal, how to mentor young adults for a lifetime of positive contributions, how to recruit and retain the best talent, and how to better integrate a diverse group of people.

Mixed Juice: Who Will Start for SU in 2014-15? (sujuiceonline.com; Sen/Cheng)

In the latest edition of a multi-part series, editorial staff of The Juice Online discuss various topics on Syracuse basketball. Today’s topic: Syracuse has lost three starters with CJ Fair, Tyler Ennis and Jerami Grant moving on. Who will start in their place? The Juice Online’s Saugat Sen and Wesley Cheng explored.

Wesley Cheng: Saugat, now that Jerami Grant, Tyler Ennis and CJ Fair have left Syracuse, there are three spots in the starting lineup up for grabs. Who do you think the starting 5 will be in the 2014-15 season?

Saugat Sen: That is a tough question because there are so many moving parts. Let’s start with the front court. So much is riding on how DaJuan Coleman recovers, because if he is healthy and ready to go, then Rakeem Christmas slides to the 4 spot. The other forward will likely be Tyler Roberson. In limited minutes, he showed some huge potential. However, he was prone to some freshman mistakes that drew Boeheim’s ire from time to time. Hopefully he can take the next step this off-season. The guy that will give Roberson a run for his spot will be Chris McCullough. Wes, you have seem him play in person, what do you think of his chances of starting next year?

MCW and Former Hoya Greg Monroe

It's Official: MCW Wins NBA Rookie of the Year Award (PS; Axe)

Former Syracuse University point guard Michael Carter-Williams has been named the NBA's rookie of the year for the 2013-'14 season.

Carter-Williams averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 6.2 rebounds this past season becoming just the third rookie since 1950-51 to lead all rookies in scoring, rebounding and assists, joining Oscar Robertson and Alvan Adams on that list.

MCW received 104 of a possible 124 first-place votes from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, finishing with 569 points.

For MCW, Winning Rookie of the Year Award Caps a Thrilling, Draining Season (PS; Ditota)

Michael Carter-Williams declared last September that he hoped to be the league's rookie of the year. Today, after authoring a season deserving of that designation and after weekend rumors leaked his selection, it's official:

The former Syracuse University point guard is the NBA's best rookie.

His first-year numbers made him a deserving candidate. Carter-Williams averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 6.2 rebounds to become the third rookie since 1950-51 to lead all NBA freshmen in scoring, rebounding and assists. He received 104 of a possible 124 first-place votes. It was, for Carter-Williams, a slam-dunk affirmation of the way he's performed this season despite the Sixers' smothering inability to win games (or their steadfast dedication to calculated losing).

When he declared for the draft last year after a sophomore season in which he'd led the Orange to an improbable Final Four, his detractors seized upon his slender size, his perimeter shooting deficiencies and his (misinterpreted) tendency to turn the ball over as proof that he would not, or could not survive on the next level.

Rick Jackson (00) Covers Vander Blue (2)

Waters Ranks 'Em Series: #16: 2010-11 Team Won 27 Games But Lost in 2nd Round of Big Dance (PS; Waters)

NO. 16: 2010-11 TEAM
Overall record: 27-8
Big East record (finish): 12-6 (tie 3rd in Big East)
Post-season: Lost to Marquette in second round of NCAA tournament

Best player: Rick Jackson

Kris Joseph led Syracuse in scoring at 14.3 points per game during the 2010-11 season, but Rick Jackson stood out as the Orange's top player that year. Jackson averaged 13.1 points per game, but he also led the Orange in rebounding at 10.3 points per contest. He is the only Syracuse player to average a double-double since Carmelo Anthony did it back in the 2002-03 season. Jackson also led Syracuse with 86 blocks and here's something no one would expect: Jackson had 77 assists; three more than Joseph.

2014 Hall of Fame Tipoff: How Binghamton Got into the Field (and How Syracuse Plays a Major Role in the Bingo Basketball Budget)

Look for Binghamton to Appear on the SU Basketball Schedule Regularly Over the Next Few Years...

...
High-major programs pounce on the opportunity to generate extra revenue. On the other side, revenue earned from guarantee games helps smaller programs reach budget goals.

Elliott said he and BU head coach Tommy Dempsey set a goal for the men’s basketball team to generate $200,000 of income next season. That leaves $110,000 coming from unknown origins, one of which could be Syracuse. A few sources believe the two schools struck a multi-year deal while scheduling a game at the Carrier Dome for last December.

Syracuse paid Binghamton $90,000 for last year’s trip up Interstate 81. Because the athletics department will not announce the men’s basketball team’s full schedule until the summer, next year’s guarantee package — if the next game in the deal will be played in 2014-15 — is not yet known.

Every thousand helps, though it’s all part of the plan.

“We build our expense budget based upon income,” Elliott said. “In effect, it’s not like if we get $90,000 from Syracuse that we’re $90,000 richer. All of these guarantee games that we’ve been playing over time are built into our budget model.”
