Sean Hickey: Strongest Player in College Football

Reviewing Top SU Prospects for 2015 NFL Draft: It Starts with Uber Strong OT Sean Hickey (PS; Mink)

Syracuse's 2014 draft class was headlined by defensive tackle Jay Bromley, who was taken in the third round by the New York Giants, and linebacker Marquis Spruill, picked by the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round.

Three other players have since made their way to NFL camps as undrafted free agents this week: Jerome Smith (Falcons), Ri'Shard Anderson (Titans) and Keon Lyn (Colts).

So, while we wait to see if anyone else can join those five, it's time to take an early look at the best pro prospects for Syracuse in the 2015 draft.

Offensive tackle Sean Hickey

Based off reports that he can bench press 225 pounds — the weight used to test at the NFL Scouting Combine — 41 times, it will be fascinating to see how many reps Hickey can churn out next year in Indianapolis.

CBS projection: No. 7 offensive tackle in 2015.

What SU Football Players Will Make an NFL Roster? (sujuiceonline.com; Stechschulte)

Over the three days of the 2014 NFL draft, Syracuse saw a couple of its former players get tabbed by NFL teams. Late Friday night, defensive tackle Jay Bromley was chosen by the New York Giants, then, on Saturday afternoon, linebacker Marquis Spruill had his name called by the Atlanta Falcons.

Before Saturday night turned into Sunday morning, three more Orange football players got onto the path to the NFL. Running back Jerome Smith joined Spruill in heading to Atlanta after signing a free agent contract. Defensive backs Ri’Shard Anderson and Keon Lyn headed to a couple AFC South teams, signing deals with Tennessee and Indianapolis, respectively.

Each of the five former SU players has a different chance at realizing his dream of playing in the NFL. Here’s how their chances stack up:

Jay Bromley, the star defensive tackle for the Orange, was selected by the New York Giants in the third round with the 74th overall pick of the draft. Bromley not only returns to his hometown as a member of his favorite childhood team, but he is re-united with a pair of former Syracuse teammates in quarterback Ryan Nassib and offensive tackle Justin Pugh, who were both drafted by the Giants last year.

Get to Know Your Orangemen: #83 Sean Avant (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

...
How'd He Get Here: George McDonald went ahead and snapped him up after Mario Cristobal was fired and left all of FIU's recruits scrambling for better landing spots.

What'd Recruiting Sites Say: Rivals and ESPN both said three stars. Two stars from the others.

Money Quote: "I'm that receiver, you need a first down, throw it to me, I'll make a move. Speed is not very on my side, but I play the game with attitude." - Avant tells us why he's going to be a star for SU.

Former FM DE Ty Wheatley Jr Remains Close to SU HC Scott Shafer

Which SU Recruiting Targets are Nominated for US Army AA Bowl? (PS; Mink)

Tyrone Wheatley Jr., the top-ranked high school football recruit in New York for the 2015 recruiting class, is one of 400 nominees for the 2015 US Army All-American Bowl.

Wheatley is the son of former Syracuse running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley and had previously played at Fayetteville-Manlius before transferring to Canisius near Buffalo last summer (Wheatley Sr. is now the running backs coach on Doug Marrone's Bills staff.)

Wheatley has a slew of major Division I offers, including Michigan, where his father starred. Syracuse is said to be a viable option given the comfort factor, and Wheatley could camp at Syracuse next month.

Teel Time: ACC Retains Lame Status Quo with 8 Game Conference Football Schedule (dailypress.com; Teel)

...
Swofford told reporters Monday that the ACC hasn’t decided whether BYU, or perhaps even Army and Navy, would satisfy the scheduling mandate.

That was yet another peculiar element to Monday. Why go public with incomplete news?

Regardless of the BYU verdict — no way on Army and Navy — the ACC’s scheduling partnership with football independent Notre Dame figures to fill some of those voids for Virginia Tech and/or Virginia, and Monday’s decision may finalize a proposed 2017 game at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., between the Hokies and West Virginia.

Now perhaps an eight-game format will serve the ACC best as college football this year enters the playoff era. Perhaps greater non-conference scheduling flexibility will enhance ACC teams’ access to the playoff and the other major bowls the playoff controls. Perhaps a larger inventory of non-conference games, as opposed to league contests, will fast-track the ACC’s push for an ESPN channel dedicated to the conference.

I doubt it, and indeed, this issue has split much of major college football.

While the ACC and SEC have elected to remain at eight conference games, even as they’ve expanded to 14 teams, the Pacific 12 and Big 12 are remaining at nine games, with the Big Ten moving from eight to nine in 2016.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany gave a rousing, spot-on endorsement to nine in an interview last week with USA Today’s Nicole Auerbach.

Replacing a tame (lame?) non-conference game, especially those against Championship Subdivision opponents, with a league date would help everyone’s strength of schedule, a critical component for playoff access. Moreover, growing the conference schedule from 56 to 63 games annually would provide additional programming for a potential ACC channel.

As important, a ninth game would increase the frequency of interdivisional matchups — annual crossover rivalries such as Virginia Tech-Boston College, Virginia-Louisville and Florida State-Miami excepted — from once every six years to once every three.

ACC Commissioner Jim Swofford Recommended ACC Remain at 8 Conference Games for Now

ACC to Stay with 8 Game Conference Schedule, Keep Current Division Setup, Require 1 OOC P5 Game Starting in 2017 (PS; Mink)

The popular debate surrounding eight or nine conference games effectively ended Monday when ACC Commissioner John Swofford recommended the league schedule remain at eight games.

Swofford also announced that the league will require its schools to schedule at least one nonconference game against a power five opponent starting in 2017. Notre Dame, which has a built-in scheduling agreement with the conference, counts toward that requirement.

ACC Decides Eight is Enough (post-gazette.com; Werner)

ACC commissioner John Swofford announced Monday that the league’s athletic directors voted to stay at eight conference games, rather than switch to nine.

The group also agreed at the first day of ACC spring meetings that, starting in 2017, every conference member must play a non-conference game against a league from one of the other four “power five” conferences: the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12 and Pac 12.

“Our schools have discussed this at great length over the last year or two, even,” Swofford said. “In the last two or three sessions, you could see some consistency in the discussion and where it was probably leading.”

Delone Carter Released by Jacksonville Jaguars (PS; Mink)

Ex-Syracuse running back Delone Carter was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday.

Carter appeared in one game last season for the Jaguars after spending his first two years with the Indianapolis Colts.

Carter signed with the Jaguars in December after injuries accumulated on their depth chart. He spent time in training camp with the Ravens and Colts last summer before being released before the season.

Wow - Teel really went off the reservation with that column.

I am unhappy with the decision too. No real problem with an 8 game schedule, but I hate the current rotation scheme and really wanted to see the divisions abolished and the 3-5-5 rotation implemented.

I am hoping that once the NCAA gives formal permission to the P5 conferences to set up their conference schedules and divisions as they see fit, the ACC will get on board with the 3-5-5.

3-5-5 is good for the 315.
