That's Steve's dad Norm Goldsmith 4th from the left wearing #44. Norm was killed in a car accident in 1977 that left Steve's mom critically injured. That's Bernie kneeling as the team manager. Looks a bit like David his son.

Boeheim a coward? He put his reputation on the line defending his 50yr friend. That is Cowardice? That takes courage when the media court is in session.

Thanks for Posting the Pic OE I wanted to after the Goldsmith article-- Sam Penceal one of my Favs. About 8yrs ago I saw Rick Berry in front of ESPN in Orlando (Between Christmas and New Years) I told him I liked the Golden State team he was on with Al Attles and of course I had my SU Shirt on. He talked about playing SU in the Hurricane Classic and the only player he mentioned was Sam Penceal. Sam also guarded Bill Bradley in that Tourney. It might not have been called the Hurricane Classic at that time but that's the name that comes to mind. Sad to hear about Norm Goldsmith.

The 1965-1966 SU men's basketball team, which went 22-6: (from left) head coach Fred Lewis, Rex Trobridge, Vaughn Harper, Norm Goldsmith, George Hicker, Sam Penceal, Steve Ludd, Tom Bednark, Richie Cornwall, Frank Nicoletti, Tom Ringelmann, Jim Boeheim, Dave Bing, Dick Ableman, Rich Dean, Val Reid, assistant coach Roy Danforth. Kneeling is team manager Bernie Fine. In that picture Bernie looks a lot like his son David.

Weber's take is a good one...why would a ball boy, if in fact he did go to away games, go...as a member of the traveling squad...seems a bit pricey...hopefully it wasnt "we have a seat, he can room with me"-B Fine...yikes that would not be good.

To me, the most notable story above is the Cooney redshirt article. He seems to have a good attitude about it and will be a huge asset over the next few years.

What a great attitude this kid has:

“Yeah, it can be tough coming in every day knowing you’re not going to play, but it will benefit me so much,” Cooney said. “I’m coming in every day and working hard. You can’t let it get to you because you have such a bright future and you can’t think that you wasted a whole year because that will get you down. I’m excited to be here and I’m looking forward to my future here at Syracuse.”
Cooney will be Syracuse’s biggest fan while working to improve in practice and getting stronger off the court.
“We’ve got really great leaders here with Kris and Scoop along with talented young players and bigs,” Cooney said. “I’m working on everything. I think one of the biggest things I can improve on is my body. I need to get a little stronger, faster and quicker. I need to be more flexible and get in better shape. I’ll be working on my gameevery day while cheering for my teammates.”
