As an offshoot of another post, I thought about this. If a new coach came in after last season and had the commiments/signings for this year and next, how much time would people give him? Does he get a chance to develop what is at SU plus commitments for next year plus 1 recruiting class (basically 3 years) or more or even less? Does he "run off" a large portion of the current roster? What do recruits think about that?

3 or 4 years. 5 years tops and that's dependent on results and progress.

I would say 5 years...give them time to develop the current players as they graduate, recruit for 2/3 years, and build something sustainable.

I think college basketball gives a decent amount of time, somewhere around 3 or 4 years. Not like football and specifically the SEC where you might get the boot after 2.

5 years. I think you try to convince as many people who have talent to stay and can develop. Guys like Quincy and Goodine etc. Then if you have been recruiting kids you try and see if any can reclassify depending on what needs you have.

As a comparison when Hop took UW he tried to convince all the kids to stay that were coming in and convinced Crisp, Nowell and Dickerson to stay. He lost some others and was able to get Naz Carter and Hameir Wright to reclassify.

The Hop comparison is interesting because he was not at all afraid to lose players he didn’t think could contribute in his system. I wonder how he would approach this roster if he inherited it next year. From what I know of him I think we’d lose 3 or 4 players right off the bat but he’d probably bring in a few of his own guys on short notice. Getting Nowell to re-commit and landing Carter shortly after taking over were hugely important developments for him.

Nowell in particular. I think Crisp is not talked about enough. Not because he was good but he was the first guy to buy in to Hop and he did so really quickly. He then was telling guys to stay and we could be part of something. Dickerson looked at UVA and could of gone closer to home. I heard an interview end of last year with Nowell where he said Crisp was very persistent with everyone and with out that he probably would have left.

3 years to show something. 4 years to be legit good. That’s what it took for Turgeon and Bruce Pearl. That seems a fair expectation in a sport where 1or 2 players make a huge difference.

I agree, but it’s funny because football is so much harder to turn around. Pearl would never have lasted as Auburn football coach after two losing seasons.

There has to be progress by the middle of the 2nd year. And it only goes up from there.
