1. Run the ball better

2. Fix the run defense.

We have seen this movie in the recent past.

Right now the only thing that has been consistent is production in the pass game and making something out of nothing, which is remarkable with 1st year OC and True Freshmen QB. That's usually the stuff that puts you over the top once the basics are established. This whole thing is backward.

The run game needs to be credible, the pass/run mix has to be more balanced, and they have to run more plays.

As far as the defense goes, these guys know what to do to get it fixed. It doesn't need to be great and the pass defense is the least of the issues. Not like we are playing a Big 12 schedule.

The formula of this defense still works if they can win on 1st and 2nd down consistently (doesn't have to be all the time) and keep the ball in front of them.

At the end of the day this whole season is WIP setting up next year. Wins and losses are of secondary concern, at least for me. But the third word in there is "Progress".

Why always a clown.

I would think you would appreciate Shafers approach, it's all about percentages.

Run defense against FBS teams: 4.3 yards per carry. If I am an OC I run the ball constantly because I know I'll get a first down.

But, you are wrong to say the pass defense is not a problem. FBS opponents completion percentage = 67% If I am an OC, I throw three straight times because I know I will get a first down.

In truth, the whole defense is a cocked-up mess.

You forgot perhaps the most important thing to get this turned around.

3. TRAINING MONTAGE!!!!!

DRAAAAAAAAGOOOOOOOOO!!!
The hours approaching, just give it your best
And you've got to reach your prime
That's when you need to put yourself to the test
And show us a passage of time

We're gonna need a montage
(Montage)
Ooh it takes a montage
(Montage)

Show a lot of things happing at once
Remind everyone of what's going on
(What's going on?)
And with every shot you show a little improvement
To show it all would take too long

That's called a montage
(Montage)
Oh we want montage
(Montage)

And anything that we want to go
From just a beginner to a pro
You need a montage
(Montage)
Even Rocky had a montage
(Montage)

Montage
Montage

Anything that we want to go
From just a beginner to a pro
You need a montage
(Montage)
Ooh it takes a montage
(Montage)

Always fade out in a montage
If you fade out, it seem like more time
Has passed in a montage
Montage

I was gonna use that but we needed some next level Rocky after that game.

how is it all about percentages?

defenses that are good on plays with 1s and 2s on sticks are probably pretty good

That's brillant, that's why they need to tighten up the run defense.

This defense has consistently given up a high completion percentage.

I think our run game is about to take off now that Fredericks is officially the starter.

Well, maybe not "take off" but it'll be improved.

It always has, and always will, begin up front, right? Marrone and Atkins squeezed every last drop out of some pretty mediocre offensive lines...and doing so set up a lot of successful play-action offense. Alec Lemon probably shouldn't have been what he ended up being--certainly not on athleticism alone--and I firmly believe the run game gave him time and space to be a solid playmaker. I miss the days of SU being a strong, fundamentally sound run team. I hope they can get that back.

I hope SU has an answer to Micah Kiser, Virginia's leading tackler. He's #53 and will be a force all day. Virginia's offensive line is banged up so hopefully we'll get off the ball better on defense.

Tackle better will help but we got out schemed against USF. I've never seen a SS/HB team get outflanked on the edge so successfully. Hopefully we get it fixed quickly.

Agreed. That said, and as bad as the USF game plan was, if either of 2 players makes a tackle on that 3rd and 14 we probably tie the game up and have all the momentum on our side. Feel like we win the game if we make that one play.

Was the flea flicker a 3rd and 14 play? Cordy had that play dead to rights and the personal foul call on Whitner just killed us.

1. Run the ball with our best RB more often

2. Fix the edge run defense.
