Tyler Marona We Hardly Knew Ya

For those of you scoring at home ...

That leaves 65 "potential" returning players (not counting anyone who might jump to the NFL, take his degree, or transfer).

We have 14 commits on the board.

Plenty of room at the inn.

Edited to show Flemming possibly applying for a hardship waiver and returning.

I haven't looked lately, any redshirt juniors that would may be taking their degrees and moving on?

Amazing how they disclose he has concussions (vs upper body injury), but if u have a sprained ankle, were not going to tell you that...

14? I only count 13 after the decommits of Cabinda and Benzschawel...and that's including Wayne Williams.

Sorry for Marona but happy to see that he will be staying on as a student coach.

Corey Cooper should be included with Williams.

There has been talk that Shafer has already informed a few players of this. I am assuming Kinder, and Rene are 2. Not sure who else would be a candidate

Heard that Flemming is expecting to get a medical redshirt and will be back.

Is it even a guarantee that he will be fully healthy by then? He has a serious injury in mid-September. Even if best case he is cleared in 9 months will be be full strength by the time Fall camp starts? I feel for the kid, but he will have a degree, he has never played in his career, combined with serious injury issues, maybe the best bet as a program is to go with a younger guy?

If he tore his ACL, he will be full go for fall camp. 9 months is when most are cleared for full activity. Doesn't mean he can't run and get in shape before that.

I don't think Flemming's injury was an ACL, but I'm not certain. Everyone on this board is killing the WR group and we don't want a 5th year guy back? I know he's yet to do anything on the field, but SU has enough room for him to come back and his size could help.

Back on original topic, it was a really good article by Carlson on Marona today. Tough break for Tyler, but he should be commended for putting his health first, and it's good of SU to not only honor his scholarship, but to keep him involved with the program.

Retiring From FB...this should free up a scholie.

He was in the two deep before he got hurt in the preseason. Tyler, we hardly knew ye.

Best of luck to him in the future. Glad the powers that be are finally getting serious about dealing with serious brain injuries in this sport. I hope at some point in the near term, this drives the sport to use helmets that are designed to protect the brains of the players wearing them, as opposing to inflicting damage to the brains of those they are trying to stop.

This is the catch 22 of it all, isn't it. If you make a helmet more protective, players will use it as a weapon because they feel like they're protected. Another part of it is simply physics. A concussion is caused when the brain slams against the inside of the skull, most often do to rapid deceleration. How do we go about making helmets that slow the rate of deceleration so that the cerebrospinal fluid has the opportunity to absorb the impact prior to the brain contacting the skull? I'm sure more advances will be made, but that'll only encourage players to use the helmets even more.

What we need is more tackling and less hitting. I hate seeing a guy cross his arms over his chest in preparation for trying to hit someone as hard as he can. That is not tackling. If that's the way our players (or any players for that matter) are being taught, the coaches should be fired. Guys should be wrapping up and pulling the ball carrier to the ground. Sometimes those still result in big hits (see Jadeveon Clowney against Michigan), but the frequency would be less. Aside from that, it would make for more fundamentally sound football too. I'd prefer watching that to all of the missed tackles we see now while waiting to see that one big hit every game.
