UCLA at 6-6

This is kind of quirky, and I suppose does not speak highly of Pac 12 football, but UCLA is 6-6, and will almost certainly be 6-7 after they play Oregon in the Pac 12 title game.

I know you need 6 wins to be bowl-eligible, but how would a bowl committee feel about inviting a team with a losing record to play in their game?

On April 26, 2006, the NCAA announced that they were relaxing the rules for eligibility starting with the 2006 season, particularly in light of the new twelve-game college football season. Now, teams with .500 records can qualify for bowl games if their conference has a contract with a bowl game. Also, teams with .500 records (i.e. 6–6) could earn bowl bids if all other FBS teams with winning records have been taken and postseason spots still remain vacant. In thirteen-game seasons (used because of conference championship games, or allowable for Hawaiʻi and any of its home opponents in a given season), a team must win seven games.

Isn't the requirement a .500 record?

I don't know if you need "6 wins" or a ".500 record." FWIW, CollegeFootballNews reports that UCLA will petition to be allowed to get into a bowl at 6-7.

Generally speaking, if you are good enough to win your division, you should easily be over .500. I guess nobody ever thought that this would be a possibility.

Word was that at 6-7 UCLA would have to apply to the NCAA for a waiver to be allowed to play in a bowl game. It is widely assumed that they would be granted that waiver as the Pac-12 would be unable to fulfill all of their contracted tie-ins at this time.
