The University of Connecticut has proposed reducing the number of games it will play next season if the NCAA grants a waiver to allow the Huskies to play in the 2013 men's basketball tournament.

The school is currently barred from the tourney, a penalty for years of below-standard academic results, but it requested a waiver last month.
An NCAA spokesperson told ESPN.com's Andy Katz that the request is under review.
That document, obtained this week by The Associated Press under a Freedom of Information request, outlines proposed self-imposed penalties that will be instituted if the request is granted.

ESPN

""Collectively, the university's proposal will clearly send the message that the institution fully accepts the responsibility for past failings," the school writes in its waiver request. "It will result in the economic equivalent of a postseason ban without harming the very students the NCAA is trying to protect.""

Right, because exhibition games are equivalent to NCAA tournament games.

 Whoa does that mean they get rid of those early creampuffs that always seem to beat them i.e. UCF? Somehow that does not seem to be much of a penalty? How do you equate the number of season games with the NCAA Tourny?

Not even that. The article said EXHIBITION games.

Yeah right. You make the same amount of ticket and TV revenue from an exhibition game against the Australian All Stars that you do from March Madness. Uhm, no Connmen. What a bunch of hosers.

When the dealer changes the game mid-way through the hand, sometimes you have to argue.

Seriously, the NCAA is ridiculous in this situation.

And any of our fans laughing at their situation are missing the fact that we just might be in their situation in 14 or 15. I hope to god uconn gets its waiver so we will have a roadmap to follow when we are in their shoes.

I think that UConn is demonstrating that they are introducing enough meaningful change to warrant being allowed to play in the NCAA Tournament in 2013. They are agreeing to forfeit the exhibition games on top of the four regular season games they are forfeiting so I don't get why you guys are getting your panties in a bunch.

Honestly, I couldn't care any less about UConn. I think what they're doing is BS, but knowing that our team isn't exactly Stanford or Northwestern in the classroom, I'm not necessarily against a precedent being set where a team could get to an NCAA by some other means. This APR thing has the potential to deep six a season for us too.

UCONN is gonna get the waiver. I mean they walk on NBA top 5 picks onto their team when they have no scholarships to give. No way would someone dare postseason ban them.

Why don't they just ask the NCAA to give them a double bye in the tournament, thereby eliminating the revenue streams from those games?

Making the punishment about revenue misses the point entirely.

I don't think it will matter in '14 or '15 because you can't claim that you were blindsided, like UConn is claiming. If we get sanctioned in '14 or '15 it will be because we deserve it under the APR rules. The NCAA wants to ensure that you're not just bringing guys in with no intention of making progress towards a degree (i.e. a "real" student-athlete). UConn may have a legit claim because of the fact that the NCAA did not allow for sufficient time to come into compliance with their new rules, as I understand their situation.

This rule is useless because the schools that actually should be punished by it (like Kentucky) will never be. All their professors are bought by the athletics dept and will pass student athletes no matter what. There's just no way they are fairly getting top APR scores when 4-5 guys every year there have no intention of staying past freshmen year.

Like they've never had a Melo situation under Cal yet with all their NBA players who probably never attend a class in the second semester.

Basically I'm not sure about the point of this rule at all.

They need to try to put in a waiver for this year.. Or else its NIT time for UCONN!!

on the one hand, I am sympathetic to UConn's situation, but on the other hand, I think this is a stupid proposal.

if the sanctions were about economics, then it would be expressed as a fine, not a post season ban. the latter is a statement about the seriousness of the issue to the NCAA, and the UConn proposal indicates that they don't get that.

True but it would have changed thing for Cuse if implemented a few years earlier, I believe.

Yeah, I understand a little the laughing at Uconn and whatever, but this could easily happen to us.

The further we get away from that 2008-2009 year, though, the better.

If I'm not mistaken, we'd be out of this year's tournament as well, since our APR is only 928. Does anyone know the details?

Edit: Just looked it up, the old rule also allowed for you to make it with a 2 year score over 930. We're at 932.5)

Will they only be looking at 4 year scores in the future? Because it looks like the NCAA website only has t he yearly scores for the last 2, and prior to that, it has the rolling scores. So while I don't know the exact score that will be rolling off, for the first 2 years of our current 4 year score, we averaged a 923.5. if you assume we're rolling off a 923.5, which isn't right, probably, we'd need about a 930 this year to remain above the marker. We had a perfect score, 1000, last year.

All I know is that I'm disappointed as hell that SUforLife hasn't weighed in on this yet...

Why don't they offer to give up any monies earned by their perticipation in any post season tournament?

Calhoun is about the most selfish FOCK I've ever encountered.

UConn’s bid to overturn ’13 tourney ban is a joke

We need to hear Jim “Not A Dime Back” Calhoun, of all stubborn souls, give voice to the remarkable groveling his university is doing on behalf of his basketball program to save it from a 2013 NCAA tournament ban.
--
I would love to hear the eternally unapologetic Calhoun feign penitence for the academic underachievement of his program – underachievement profound enough that it has the Huskies falling short of NCAA Academic Progress Rate minimums in order to be eligible for March Madness.
I would be fascinated to hear Calhoun, without reading a script through gritted teeth, toe the company line of concessions in exchange for the chance to play for the ’13 national title. Those concessions include reducing the number of regular-season games from 27 to 23; forfeiting a Big East postseason revenue share; no head-coach recruiting off-campus in the fall of 2012; extra time in study hall; and a Calhoun-led tour of inner-city schools to stress the importance of education.

You really got to read the whole thing.

They are forced to stay in the Big East while the "real" schools leave. They have been punished enough!

Enjoy replacing Syracuse on your schedule with UCF!
