As a golfer I realized long ago that since in a way you are always competing against yourself and the course if you don't follow the rules you have no accurate measurement of your own abilities. You sort of cheat yourself in that way. I refuse to record a score if I play by myself because its just too east to pick up a short put rather than sinking it, take a practice shot after a bad shot (even if you don't use the practice shot) or decide the chewed up part of the fairway should be ground under repair, ect. That's not even getting into actual rulings where you have to drop and take penalties when often times you need another set of eyes to be sure you are doing things correctly and doing them in the right location. Not that I don't know what my score was but I consider playing by yourself a practice round and nothing more.
