I respectfully disagree with this. Take out the odd winners - Denver, Yale, Loyola - every single year since I've been following college lacrosse since 1989, the same 5-7 teams are always the only teams legitimately coming close to winning it all. Yeah, it took ND awhile to break through and same with Cornell. Hopkins has been down for a bit, Princeton is still in somewhat of a rebuild to a powerhouse...but the top tier of men's DI lacrosse has long been the same teams. Syracuse, UVA, Maryland, Hopkins, Duke, ND, UNC (cough, cough). Maybe Mike Powell wasn't playing against the same quality of teams all year long, but come the playoffs, it has always been hard to win it all because 5-7 programs are always stacked and always in the mix. And as an aside, I think Joey Spallina is a great lacrosse player. However, having played against Mike, Casey, and Ryan Powell, I still have never seen anything like Mike Powell. Take the lacrosse stick out of his hands and he was still one of the most remarkable athletes I've ever seen.
