(I've decided to combine my 'Upside' and 'Downside ' into one post. Enough people know I do both that I can't have the fun of catching someone who own read the Downside post and thinks I'm a cad.)
The Upside
- Coach Autry, for the second game in a row, declared this to be his team’s best performance of the year. That’s a good trend.
- Is Judah Mintz our best player? Quadir Copeland is giving him a run for his money. Malik Brown does a lot of things for us. I like it when there’s a debate about that.
- Mintz had a bit of a wobbly game but led us with 18 points and tied Copeland for the lead with 5 assists and 4 steals. He got to the line 11 times. I’ll take it.
- Copeland was second in scoring, not really his forte, with 15 points, led in rebounding with 9 and tied Mintz for the lead in assists with 5. He got the line 8 times himself. And he was all over the court making the Ducks quack on both offense and defense.
- Brown was 6 for 8 from the field and scored 13 points to go with 4 steals. I was surprised he had only two rebounds. His offensive and defensive efforts helped us have a huge lead in “points in the paint: 50-28 in a game we won by 20.
- Casey Stengel used to say he won so many games because he never played one without “my man”. He’d get Yogi Berra in the game somehow even if he wasn’t catching. I’m always curious who an SU basketball coach’s ‘man’ is: the one who plays the most minutes. For Adrian Autry so far, that’s JJ Starling 377 minutes, 35 more – almost a full game), than the guy you’d thing, Judah Mintz. JJ had his second great good game with 14 points on 6 for 9 shooting, 2 for 3 from three. He’s now 5 for 6 in his last two games after a 1 for 18 start.
- Benny Williams got to play 18 minutes. He took advantage of it to score 8 points, pull down 3 rebounds, and pass for two assists while stealing the ball twice. This is a fun team to play on and he’ll have more fun if he’s out there to play with them.
- Kyle Cuff came into the game and made a three pointer at 10:53 of what had been a dismal first half to get us from 7-14 to 10-14. That doesn’t sound like a big deal but you could see the spirits of the team and the SU fans that were there pick up and that was the emotional beginning of our comeback and eventual dominance of this game. Kyle has 12NP this season and he got 7 of them tonight.
- This is the best defensive team we’ve had in years. Heck, it’s the only good one. You have to be able to take over a game and this defense, which produces offense as well as defense, allows us to do that. We can also take over a game with our drives, (unless we are playing Virginia), but that gets dependent on the ref’s whistle. Defense is just athleticism and unrelenting aggressiveness.
- Coach Autry had show a good ability to make in-game adjustments and also to draw up plays to use coming out of timeouts, something his mentor, JB was good at.
- We haven’t beaten anyone who would impress the NCAA tournament committee yet and have lost to all three of ranked opponents by double figures, but this is becoming a team that can make some serious noise in the ACC and we could be someone that nobody wants to play at the end of the season.
7-3 with 21+ to go…
LET’S GO ORANGE!
Net Points
This year I’m going to make things a bit easier on myself and just list the net points in each game after the Upside. Once a month I’ll do a deeper dive into the numbers rather than doing a “Net Points, etc.” post after every game. ‘Net’ points is the positives (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks) minus the negatives, (missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and fouls committed).
Quadir Copeland game: 21NP in 32 minutes; season: 107NP in 207 minutes = 20.7NP/40m
Judah Mintz game: 13NP in 36 minutes; season: 166NP in 342 minutes = 19.4NP/40m
Benny Williams game: 12NP in 18 minutes; season: 30NP in 98 minutes = 12.2NP/40m
Maliq Brown game: 11NP in 26 minutes; season: 120NP in 241 minutes = 19.9NP/40m
JJ Starling game: 11NP in 30 minutes; season: 109NP in 377minutes = 11.6NP/40m
Kyle Cuffe game: 7NP in 14 minutes; season: 12NP in 126 minutes = 3.8NP/40m
Naheem McLeod game: 6NP in 14 minutes; season: 97NP in 173 minutes = 22.4NP/40m
Chris Bell game: -2NP in 12 minutes; season: 66NP in 295 minutes = 8.9NP/40m
Justin Taylor game: -2NP in 18 minutes; season: 86NP in 313 minutes = 11.0NP/40m
Peter Carey game: 0NP in 0 minutes; season: 2NP in 12 minutes = 6.7NP/40m
Mounir Hima game: 0NP in 0 minutes; season: 8NP in 12 minutes = 26.7NP/40m
William Patterson game: 0NP in 0 minutes; season: 0NP in 0 minutes = 0.0NP/40m
Chance Westry game: 0NP in 0 minutes; season: 0NP in 0 minutes = 0.0NP/40m
I decided to go back to recomputing the yearly averages after each game. Is Mounir Hima our best player? No. There’s a “reserve’s advantage”. A starter who isn’t playing well will still play. A reserve will only get extensive minutes if he’s playing well. Thus, a higher percentage of reserve’s minutes will come when he’s playing well, increasing his apparent per 40 minute value. Is Naheem McCloud our best player? No. He avoids excessive negatives so everything positive he does goes into the books. And he gets a reserve’s minutes even though he starts and thus get the reserve’s advantage. Brown, Williams, Copeland, Starling and Mintz playing high pressure defense is our best line-up.
The Downside
- We keep getting off to terrible starts and having to make comebacks. Why not take the guys who are leading the comebacks, (Copeland and Brown) into the starting line-up so we won’t have to make the comebacks? AA has inherited the tendency of JB to put the people in the starting lineup he wants to take possession of that spot, not the ones who are playing the best right now. How often has that worked?
- Chris Bell and Justin Taylor both have -1NP combined in the last two games. If they want to hold on to their possessions, they need to become more consistent contributors.
- Naheem McLeod again has positive NP overall (6NP in 14 minutes) but it’s the plays he doesn’t make that people remember. Too many missed rebounds, shows that got past his long arms and missed lay-ups, (he hasn’t scored in two games), etc. He does stuff, but it’s not enough. And the team isn’t prospering when he’s out three.
