not that there's was any ever doubt, but Dan you know your stuff that was spot on an awesome analysis. Good work. 100% agree with your DM and AB takes. Good stuff.
good read - completely disagree with your opinion on the early 2-pt conversion attempt though
you don't make that and it takes away some of your momentum just gained with the TD. Also, with that much time left in the game and with an opponent like USC - you know they're going to score again. If you kick the point and they score a TD you're down two scores, but one of them can be a FG - by missing the XP you now need two TDs if USC scores another TD (which of course they immediately did). There's simply no need to go for two there. If you're going to be aggressive - quit punting on make-able 4th downs on the other side of the field - don't take a point off the board while there's still 15 minutes left in the game.
fwiw, i'm totally indifferent to going for 1 or 2 in the middle of the game.I tend to agree in that I hate chasing points with soooo much time on the clock. But I can live with going for 2 if it fits a broader aggressive philosophy.
What's baffling is going for 2, and then punting 5 minutes later from the 49. There's no logical consistency in those two decisions.
good catch, thanksExcellent, as always Dan.
One comment - change "morale" to "moral" in the first sentence.![]()
I'm waiting for the day when a coach just says it to the kicking game altogether. We're not kicking field goals, we're not punting, and every time we kickoff we're squibbing or trying an onside. We're not going to use scholarships on long snappers, short snappers, kickers or punters. We have no such thing as a punt coverage team. We have returners and that's it.fwiw, i'm totally indifferent to going for 1 or 2 in the middle of the game.
the expected values work out to be the same and there are a million different combinations of scores that can follow
i'm sure he thought about it the wrong way but its way down my list of things to get worried about
you need a guy to kick field goals at the buzzer.I'm waiting for the day when a coach just says it to the kicking game altogether. Give me a break coaching didn't win game but didn't lose it either USC is a really good team with some really good play makers and good speed all the way around . Get a grip we are still not their equals but are getting much closer. Lets worry more if we loose to rest of of schedule if we do I would agree about coaching but not yetusc is not great, our defense was outstanding, but was beat by half time due to anemic offense in the first half.marrone has no balls and coaching lost this game.not hackett,or shaffer but marrone. i have been a hcdm advocate but he needs to let hackett make some situational decisions.
