Just caught this on the ESPN crawl. USC will offer 4-year scholarships in football and men's & women's hoops. It's the right thing to do. I'd love to see the ACC be the first conference to adopt such a policy.

I'm pretty sure right now they are just 1 year schollies that renewed each year.
That is the case. One of the rallying points for the unionization crowd is to guarantee scholarships for a longer period, generally 4 years.

A procedure that the SEC routinely takes advantage of when over-recruiting. They "politely" tell a former 3 or 4 star kid that he is not likely to see much or any playing time in the future because of the new 5 star they just brought in or sometimes that they are not renewing the scholarship. "Thanks for wasting your time here at (enter any SEC school here) for a season or two, and sorry that you have to forgo another season in transfer. Good luck." The kid could have had playing time at many other schools but was sucked into the big name program to ride the pine, probably with a "little" cash inducement.

A reason right there for the ACC to make 4 year scholies the rule. As a recruiting weapon it could dissuade at least some kids from going to an SEC factory.

Two way street.

Would a recruit agree to a 4 year "non-compete" clause where he can't transfer to another school?

I don't think there would be anything preventing a kid from choosing to transfer in this. Just as such a kid could choose to go pro after 3 years. In order to do it, I think a kid would have to "opt-in" to the scholarship each year to allow for transfers and leaving to go pro. But that's better for the kid than the school doing the opting, like is down now in the SEC.

I'm okay with coaches having "the talk" and telling the over-recruited players that a transfer would be their best opportunity to see the field. While its talked about alot, I can't think of any examples where a coach actually didn't renew a scholarship for players that didn't want to leave - seems that they'd be crucified on the recruiting trail. It's usually masked by dismissal for grade or disciplinary issues, which may or may not be trumped up, I guess. There's also the movie option of the coach making life a living hell for players that refuse to leave.

If offerring a 4-year scholarship, I'd expect a 4-year committment from the player in return (or at least until graduation or turning pro). However, there must be some sort of clause in there requiring that the player remain in good academic standing. That would give each side an out.

The SEC lawyers would then have that out cause needed by the player that would have been cut to all of a sudden to have bad grades or "Have issues that are detriment to the school." Trust me, they will find a way no matter what rules are put in place.

The ACC is actually behind on this and although SEC coaches encourage kids to transfer, many have guaranteed scholarships. Auburn, Florida, Ohio State, Nebraska and Michigan State all already do this. Good for USC though.

I know they are one year now.. but the reality is 90%+ of them are for 4-5 years. How many kids really leave early because they are not renewed? Even if they make them 4 year plans they will still have kickers in them to give them the ability to get the kid out. Semantics might make them different but it really changes little.

The 4-year scholarship will do more for the Olympic sports where many kids are partial, and aid fluctuates more. This isn't a big change for FB and Hoops.
